Our knowledge of Methodism is largely derived from SoranosO writings. It was an attempt to explain medical facts in a systematic way, but its dogmatism was moderate. They (the Methodists) were willing to take experiments into account, and the best of them, Rufus and Soranos, were making innumerable observations...two great works of Soranos dealing respectively with chronic and acute diseases had been translated in the fifth or sixth century by a Numidian doctor, Caelius Aurelianus. We know almost nothing about that early translator and yet his Latin text superseded the Greek original (which was lost) and hius own name replaced that of the author!O#11;OOribasios wrote an encyclopedia of medicine in seventy books including all the ancient Greek medicine that had come to him; it was the more precious because many ancient fragments (otherwise lost) were quoted verbatim. The work was so bulky, however, that it failed to be preserved completely; only one-third of it has come down to us. He also wrote two smaller works, the Synopsis and the Euphorista [medical advice for travelers]...
