Augsburg, Johann Schobsser, 1492. 24,6 x 18,6 cm. Saint Jerome (= Eusebius Hieronymus Jerome) (c. 347-420) (Formerly Saint Heirom) (Latin: Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus) one of the great fathers of the early Christian Church. He was next to Origen, who wrote in Greek, the most learned student of the Bible among the Latin ecclesiastical writers, and, previous to modern times, the only Christian scholar able to study the Hebrew Bible in the original. His major work was his translation of the Scriptures from Hebrew and Greek into Latin, which became the Vulgate. He is recognized by the Catholic Church as a canonized saint and Doctor of the Church and his version of the Bible is still an important text in Catholicism. He is also recognized as a saint by the Eastern Orthodox Church, where he is known as St Jerome of Stridonium or Blessed Jerome. He is commemorated on 30 September with a memorial.
