      small 4to. 212 x 152mm. [ff. 182]. roman letter. 40 lines. initial spaces with guide letters. contemporary quarter blind-stamped calf over wooden bds. (spine expertly renewed, corners worn, clasps wanting, a number of small round wormholes in binding & text). [Basel: Johann Amerbach, not after 1498]. Sixth Edition, the first to be printed outside of Italy. Filelfo, one of the greatest humanists of the Italian Renaissance, first lectured at Florence, but when animosity developed between himself and Cosimo de' Medici and his friends, he accepted an offer of employment from the state of Siena for four years, and then another from the Duke of Milan, Filippo Maria Visconti. In Milan it was Filelfo's duty to celebrate his princely patrons in panegyrics and to salute them with nuptial and funeral orations, most of which are found in the present volume. In addition there are several other works including his translations of Plutarch's two collections of apophthegms (Ad Traianum and Laconica) and of Aristotle's Rhetorica ad Alexandrum Regem.
