Pardies (1636-1673) received a Jesuitûeducation and remained with the Order for the rest of his life, developingûa vigorous intellect which made him a fine teacher and a respectedûscientific investigator. His work was a combination of novel approach,ûoriginal thought and economical exposition, for all of which Pardiesûdeserves his placein the great gallery of Jesuit scientists of the 17thC.ûThe 1st edition of 'les Elemens de Geometrie' was published in 1671 andûits elegant and lucid demonstrations made it the author's most successfulûwork, with translations and further editions reaching well into the 18thC.ûThis 2nd edition was published in the year of Pardies' untimely death at the age of 37, the preface still recording his invitation to readers to come and hear him lecture on Mondays and Fridays at the College Clermont. 12mo., 155 x 80mm, pp: [24], 163, [5], woodcut diagrams in the text, t/p vignette neatly handcoloured, sl. dampstaining,cont.ûcalf, rebacked.
