TECHENER (J. & Leon)

Histoire de la Bibliophilie. Reliures. Recherches sur les Bibliothèques des plus Célèbres Amateurs. Armorial des Bibliophiles.

Librairie Techener, Paris. 1861-64. Folio, published in 10 parts, 50 fine etched plates by Jules Jacquemart, including the rare 3 plates of coats of arms, printed front wrapper to fascicle 10 preserved, cont. morocco-backed marbled boards, a little scuffed, uncut. “Sumptuous folio... edited by the leading Paris booksellers Techener, father and son, with fifty faithfully etched plates by Jules Jacquemart, reproducing bindings of royal and other famous provenances; many of these formed part of their stock and were for sale... There can be no doubt that Libri’s and the Techeners’ work provided an enormous stimulus to the study of old bookbindings. All at once, bookbindings were in the air, and began being more widely written about.”. Extremely rare. Mejer 606, Schmidt-Kunsemuller 1527, Catalogue of an Exhibition of Highlights from the Bernard C. Middleton Collection of Books on Bookbinding 29. None of these call for the 3 plates of coats of arms. From the library of Bernard H. Breslauer.
