Mussiponti, ex typographia Stephani Mercatoris, 1596-97 First Edition FIRST EDITION, with an engraved title-page (printed title to vol two), pp (12), cols 952 : pp (7), (3, blank), cols 1195 and one page of errata, 2 vols bound in 1, folio, old plain half calf, gilt ruled and lettered spine : the binding worn and secured by tape, with a very small erasure hole in a blank portion of the engraved title (no loss of text, verso blank), short marginal tear (no loss) in two leaves, some worming in extreme upper blank margin (well clear of text) in two signatures only, otherwise in clean and very good or better state. Adams M 283 (C only). Maldonado (1533-83), Spanish theologian, whose work went far towards rescuing Catholic theology from the barbarous language and barrenness of ideas then prevalent. His commentaries on the Gospels are held in deservedly high repute. All his writings were published posthumously.
