Hondius-Janssonius:
Novissima Arragoniae Regni Tabula Authore Ioanne Baptista Labbana.
Amsterdam 1636 Copper engraving, 36.5 x 49.5 cms, distinctive original English colour and English text on verso: ‘The description of Arragon’; margins renewed and neatlines made good top-right and bottom-left (some of the new maps Hondius created for his edition of the atlas were prepared on larger copper-plates, as is the case here, than many of the earlier Mercator examples, and were sometimes slightly trimmed when orignally bound). Closed centrefold split with old repair on the verso. Hondius’s only English edition of his atlas is particularly scarce, published at about the time that his son-in-law Janssonius was taking over the business. The translation, according to the title-page, was by "Henry Hexham, Quartermaister to the Regiment of Colonell Goring". Juan Labana, who supplied the base map, was a Protugese professor of cosmography, geography and topography at the Spanish court. Koeman ME 41A
