Woodcut title page with saints Dagobert, Charlemagne, and Louis framed by the arms of various provinces. Full page woodcut colophon of the Parisian printer, Poncet le Preux (1507-1559) with two dragons rampant. Contributions to the text by Jodocus Badius Ascensius (1462-1535). Ornamented woodcut initials throughout text. Bound in seventeenth century dark brown calf with double blind-ruled covers enclosing a blind-stamped leaf wreath. Gilt-lettered title and four gilt-tooled raised cords on spine separating double blind-ruled and decorated compartments. Early owner's signature on verso of unnumbered leaf 16 and marginal notations in sepia ink by the same hand throughout text. Leaves 43 and 76 are misnumbered, but the text follows in correct sequence. Wormholes in leaves 1-23 and 185-212 affecting one line of text. All foredgtes have been affected by water damage to the outer margin. Leaves 2-43 and 258-812 have been repaired with rice paper which has darkened with age. The foredges of the title page and colophon (first and last leaves) have been discreetly strengthened with a strip of paper. Joints rubbed but solid. Two small holes in base of spine; small (1.3cm) abrasion on leather of front lower corner.
