Rothomagi [Rouen], apud N. Boucher, E. Herault, P. Le Boucher, F. Vaultier, 1709 Pages (2), 4, (4), 571, (1, blank) : (2), 573-1052 ; 1053-1268, (12), 3 parts in 2 vols bound in l vol, folio, contemporary calf, fully gilt spine, with label, gilt : the binding worn but sound and very strong, internally in very good to nice state. Willem Hessels van Est (1542-1613), Dutch exegete and hagiographer, considered a saint by his friends and pupils, took part in the controversies of his time, especially in that on Molinism, in which he opposed the Jesuits. This present work, first published 1614-16 (posthumously, like most of his writings), his principal work, is valuable especially for its careful exegesis of the literal sense and its judicious choice of patristic material, following the Antiochene rather than the Alexandrian school. It was freequently reprinted down to the end of the 19C but the editions improved by Horstius, from 1679 onwards, are considered preferable.
