THE THIRTY NINE ARTICLES, AND THE CONSTITUTIONS AND CANONS, OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND; Together with Several Acts of Parliament
London: John Baskett. Bound in contemporary calf ornamented in the "Cambridge" style. 1724. 1st edition. hb. The title continues: "Together with several Acts of Parliament and Proclamations concerning Ecclesiastical Matters, That were not in former Editions, Some whereof are to be Read in Churches. To which are added several Injunctions of His Majesty to the Clergy of the Kingdom, and the Directions of the Arch-Bishop of Canterbury to the Clergy of his Province." The Thirty Nine Articles were established in 1563 and are the historic defining statements of Anglican doctrine especially as it relates to the practices of the Church of Rome. They were to establish the uniqueness of the Anglican religion in the United Kingdom, and elsewhere, through their incoporation into, and propagation through, the Book of Common Prayer. Both WorldCat and ESTC record the first edition of this title as being in 1724; the latter suggesting six separate printings in that year, all by the famous London printer John Baskett, five of them being re-issues with a cancel title leaf. The only printing not identified by ESTC as a re-issue is our copy, which paginates as [4], 167, [5], [2], blank. The joints are cracked, and the binding is worn. Contents remarkably clean, with only occasional foxing, and still tightly stitched. .
