Callimachus Of Cyrene [ Kallimachos ]. Sigismundus Gelenius
Kallimachou Kyrenaiou Hymnoi, Meta Ton Scholion...[ Greek Title ] Callimachi Cyrenaei Hymni, Cum Scholijs Nunc Primumaeditis. Sententiae Ex Diuersis Poëtis Oratoribusque Ac Philosophis Collectae...[Latin Title, Below Greek Title].
Froben, 1532. Very Good Quarto. In contemporary thin vellum yapp binding, with holes for now missing ties. Title inked near head of spine but now very faint. Page edges slightly soiled. Slight water stains on most pages, at top and botton edges. Wide margins, more so at side and bottom. Pastedown endpaper missing a piece from the top, exposing the back of the vellum and some of the binding elements. Some notations in both Greek and latin script on title page, the latin ownership inscription dated 1650. The Froben printer's device on title and last pages. Woodcut headpiece and intials, primarily in the first half of the work. An important edition of Kallimachos, considered by Dibdin (introduction to the Greek and Latin Classics, V. 1 p. 366) to be "far preferable to the Aldine", in part due to the scholarly contributions, corrections and editing of Gelenius, a noted Czech humanist who worked a great deal with the Frobens and was well known for his work editing and publishing Tertullian. This work was printed by Heironymus Froben son of Johann, the founder of the printing house and his brother in law Nikolaus Episcopius. The Frobens are well respected as not only fine scholarly printers but also as friends of great scholars, such as Erasmus and others.
