Octavo. 116 pp Illustrated with charts and diagrams, one folding table three-quarter burgundy calf lettered in gilt on spine, over marbled boards The first work to provide a real accounting of the southwestern portion of the Louisiana purchase, and also the first London edition of the first official publication with detailed information of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The first section contains material which Meriweather Lewis communicated to Thomas Jefferson, and discussed their route, trade, the Indians encountered, the flora and fauna, and, of course, the geography of the land. The southern explorations and their detailed accounts are also of equal importance, and include the first account of Texas in book form, the letters by Dr. Sibley to Henry Dearborn, in which Dr. Sibley discusses various Texas Indian tribes and about the Red River country [Sabin 40826.
