J Dodsley. 1778 Contains relevant passages concerning the American War of Independence, such as: 'Retrospective view of American affairs in the year 1776'; 'Articles of confederation and perpetual union between the 13 revolted Colonies'; 'Debates upon a proclamation issued in America by the Commissioners'; 'Genuine Correspondence between Lord Howe and Benjamin Franklin'; a speech addressed by the Lords to the King in which they declare ' we earnestly hope, that your majesty's paternal object of restoring your distracted colonies to the happy condition which, by their own misconduct, they are wretchedly fallen, will be speedily attained', etc. Of particular interest are 'A Circular Letter of Lord Howe to the Governors of the American Provinces', followed by 'Declarations' by the 'Commissioners for restoring Peace to his Majesty's Colonies', by a 'Copy of the free Pardon granted by his Majesty's Commissioners', by the 'American Oath of Allegiance', and by a 'Proclamation by his Excellency George Washington'. It also contains biographies of David Hume and Voltaire, an 'Account of the Savage Tribes of America', an 'Account of a Journey into Africa', an article 'On the Climate of America', the review of 'The History of America' by William Robertson,An account of several grand statues found on Easter Island by Capt.
