First title page (printed in red and black) mounted, two leaves with repaired tears, one causing loss of c. 6 characters, bound without final blanks. Light toning, large but faint intermittent dampmarking to corners, some other small stains, occasional early underlining and marginal notation (sometimes struck through or washed). 18th-century spotted calf, boards ruled in blind, spine in 6 blind-ruled compartments with raised bands, red morocco gilt label in second compartment, rubbed, joints cracking but sound, small losses to leather at spine ends, corner of f.f.e.p. trimmed. A posthumous reprinting of the scholar-printer Badius Ascensius's edition of Aulus Gellius; Ascensius's distinctive woodcut device is retained on the title page. The reprint seems to have been arranged by several printers who had worked with or for Ascensius, as issues appear with the imprints of Roigny and Parui as well as Vascosanus (as here). Ascensius had first published his edition in 1517, soon following it with expanded editions in 1519 and 1524, and adding the commentary of Peter Schade (or Petrus Mosellanus), also included here, in 1531. Badius's notes and Schade's commentary would continue to be reprinted in most Paris editions until Henri Estienne finally arranged for the text to be re-edited in 1585. Gellius's collection of stories and trivia, the ?Attic Nights', is a valuable source for snippets of lost works recorded in quotation. Schweiger I 377. This imprint not in Adams.
