Titles and half-titles foxed, otherwise just a little soiling and toning to a few leaves. Late 19th-century half calf over purple cloth boards (faded), spines in six compartments with raised bands, green morocco gilt labels, marbled edges and endpapers, front joint of vol. 1 splitting, both vols. worn at edges, corners, and spine ends. Recent bookplate of Murray Hunter, older armorial bookplate, and ownership inscription of Richard E.A. Townsend to verso of f.f.e.p.s The first Foulis folio of Virgil, which “presents us with the text of Burman, printed in a correct and magnificent manner” (Dibdin). Pieter Burman (1668-1741) was a pupil of both Graevius and Gronovius, and his Virgil was first published posthumously, having been finished by his nephew Pieter Burman II (1714-1778). Gaskell 639.
