[18] pp. + 357 pp. + [20] pp. index. 12mo., speckled calf, raised bands and gilt spine ornaments and lettering. Red speckled edges. Front board has a 3 inch crease, leather not too cracked. Joints slightly tender. Engraved title page by John Schweizer. Rear pastedown with the armorial bookplate of Baron Sir Frederick Evelyn; this was the prolific author and diarist John Evelyn's (1620-1706) copy, and was part of a Christie's auction in which the Evelyn materials were fixed with a small bookplate "JE. " This bookplate appears on the front pastedown. The year of publication, 1660, is the year Evelyn was a member of the group that formed the Royal Society. He was a bibliophile of the highest order, with a library of more than 4700 books and pamphlets at the time of his death in 1706. The Baron Frederick Evelyn was his great-great-grandson, inheritor of his estate Wotton in Surrey.
