AUGUSTINE, ST. (Pseudo)

Epistola ad Cyrillum de magnificentiis Hieronymi [With other tracts]

Ulrich Zell [ca 1470], Cologne - Modern blindstamped calf over wooden boards in a very attractive antique style of the period with central metal clasp (signed "GF. Köln") 4to (21:15 cm) . Only incunabular edition of these pseudo epigraphical writings attributed to St. Augustine that were printed by eminent German printer,Ulrich Zell, in Cologne around 1470. An Italian translation by Bartolomeo da Cremona appeared in Venice around 1472/74. The other tracts included are "1-9, Epistola Augustini ad Cyrillum de magnificentiis Hieronymi; 10-51a, epistola Cyrilli ad Augustinum de miraculis Hieronymi; 51a-58, epistola Hieronymi ad Susannam lapsam; 59-64, epistola Hieronymi ad Heliodorum" (BMC). A very attractive piece of early printing with rubrications and capital letters supplied in red by a contemporary hand. Although there are two worm holes towards the end of the text that affect a number of letters it is a wide margin and very fresh, unsophisticated copy. The last auction record was the Doheny copy which sold in 2001 for $9600 [64] leaves. Gothic type; rubricated throughout with initials supplied in red. Some worming which slightly affects some letters towards the end; minor foxing in the blank margins of a few leaves; otherwise a fresh, wide margined copy. § Hain-C. 6719 (2) & 8568 (59-64); GW 2949; BMC I, 188; Voulliéme, Köln 187; Goff H-238. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
