First edition of a book of proverbs by the well-known humanist author and poet Jan de Brune (1588-1658), a lawyer at Middelburg, and from 1649 "Raadspensionaris" van Zeeland. Proverbs were considered to contain in a nutshell all the wisdom of the human past, and therefore seen as an important means for education. In the present work De Brune collected thousands of proverbs, apart from the Dutch also from other languages, and added his own lines of verse to each of them, printed in Italics.
