[Amsterdam: P. Mortier, 1704]. - ¦ From one of the finest series of 18th-century biblical illustrations, by Amsterdam born artist, engraver and poet Jan Luyken (1649-1712). The present plate was produced for a Dutch edition of Josephus Works (P. Mortier, 1704); it was reissued by Covens & Mortier in 1729, and appeared in F. Houttuyns new edition in 1747. Little is known about Luyken who apprenticed for the painter Martinus Saeghmolen; he appears to have abandoned his early libertine ways and former associates after a religious conversion at the age of 26. Distinguished by their clarity and detail, Luykens works were quite popular in the period after Rembrandt. Digital image available upon request. ¦ Eighteenth-century copper engraved plate, illustrated surface measuring 32 by 41 cm. (each scene measures 16 by 20 cm). Mild embrowning and rumpling at blank edges, else fine. Professionally presented in hinged archival mat with mylar guard, suitable for framing. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
