Pierre Le Moyne (1602-71) was a Jesuit scholar and poet. This work, first published in folio in 1647, on powerful woman, from the biblical heroines and Romans to modern, as Jeanne d'Arc and Maria Stuart (but not Elisabeth of England or Christina of Sweden), illustrated with a fine series of twenty plates illustrating the subjects, was very popular. It was re-issued several times until the late 18th century, and was translated into Italian, Spanish, and English. The depicted women are Debore, Jahel, Judith, Salomone, Mariamne, Panthee, Camme, Artemise, Monime, Zenobie, Lucrece, Cleli, Porcie, Arrie, Pauline, Judith Francoise, Isabelle de Castille, la Pucelle d'Orléans, La Captive Victorieuse, Marie Stuart.
