      Strasbourg, Johannes Grüninger, 1508.. 8vo. 19th century half calf over marbled boards; gilt spine; marbled edges. A number of very interesting decorated woodcut initials. 108 leaves; 2 fly-leaves at the beginning and end.- Colophon: A8, B4, C-D6, E-G8, H-K6, L8, M6, N-O8, P-Q6 (108 leaves).. Collection of various facetious and witty texts by famous authors and kings, brought together and edited by the Strasbourg humanist and physician Johannes Adelphus (Mulingus, or Mülich; d. after 1522) who has worked together with the famous printer Johann Grüninger at several occasions. A second edition appeared in Strasbourg in 1509. Contents :- f. A1r: title (verso: blank).- f. A2: Dedicatory letter by Johann Adelphus Munlingius to Leonardus Nusbachius, dated Strasburg, 1 March 1508.- f. A3r-C3v: ALFONSUS rex Aragonum, Vafredicta (Facetiae, 'witty sayings' by Alfonso, king of Spain). - f. C4r-D3v: SIGISMUNDUS & FRIDERICUS III, Proverbia. - f. D4r-G3v: GEILER von KAYSERSBERG, Joannes , Scomata. Johann Geiler von Kaysersberg (1445-1510) was one of the most important popular and moralistic preachers of the beginning of the 16th century who often interlarded his sermons with witty stories, proverbs, and comic popular sayings, criticizing the church, government, clergy and kings alike. - f.G4r-L3v: BARBARUS, Ermolao , Orationes contra poetes . Dated: Verona, 1 April 1455. The text is preceeded by a letter of Joannes Adelphus Munlingus to Theodoricus Gresaemundus, dated Strasburg, 1 March 1508, and a poem by Jodocus Badius Ascensius 'ut boni iuvenes as litterarum studia ferventius incumbant cohortatio'. These orations by Barbaro (Venice 1454 - 1495) are published here for the first time.- f. L4r-O2v: FICINO, Marcilio , De sole et lumine opusculum. The first edition of this work by the famous Italian humanist Marcilio Ficino (1433-1499) was published in 1493. The editor of the present work, Johannes Adelphus Mulingus has translated many of his works. - f. O3r-Q6r (f. Q6v: blank): MULINGUS, Johannes Adelphus , Facetiae. The dedicatory letter by Mulingus to Georgius Ubelin, dated Strasburg, 1.2.1508 is on f. O3r; on the verso an epigram to the same. Beautiful copy of this very rare edition. - (Some occasional smudges on some leaves).
