Publisher: Printed at the Clarendon Press, by Dawson, Bensley, and Cooke, Printers to the University 1807 Containing the Old and New Testements: Translated out of the Original Tongues: and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised, By His Majesty's Special Command. Large 4to. [350 x 280 x 150 mm]. Contemporary binding of straight-grained red goatskin, the covers with a wide gilt border composed of a thick and thin fillet used twice either side of a repeated butterfly-like tool, with ogee arches in the corners, and a bline tendril roll. The spine divided into five panels, with thick bands tooled in gilt, lettered in the second and fourth panels, the other tooled with two impressions of a larger butterfly-like tool, the edges of the boards and turn-ins tooled with gilt rolls, marbled endleaves, gilt edges. (A little rubbed, strips of red cloth reinforcing the inner hinges). Darlow & Moule / Herbert 1497. A monumental Bible, in a fine binding. It has survived remarkably well considering its shape and weight (10½ kg, or 23 lb). Inscribed on the front endleaf: "John and Ellinor Anna Vaughan from their Aunt Jane Vaughan October 4th 1870" and with family records up until 1956 written on the facing flyleaf.
