Light soiling, minor edgewear, corners bumped and somewhat worn, partial cracks in text block between front free endpaper and title page and final text leaf and rear free endpaper. Toning to text, browning in an few places. Later brief annotations to front endleaves, small later owner stamp to foot of title page and dedication leaf, interior otherwise clean. A nice copy. * Later edition. This distinguished study of the legal customs of Rome and otehr ancient civilizations was first first published in 1522. A popular and respected work, it went through several editions throughout Europe, the last one in 1673. Alexander was a Neapolitan lawyer (advocate). According to Savigny, he abandoned the profession in favor of legal scholarship because he could no longer stand the abuses in the administration of justice that he encountered.
