This first volume presents six poetics texts, most now exceedingly rare and hitherto unedited, that Hessus (1488-1540) wrote during his student years at the University of Erfurt, which ended in 1509. The base text for each piece is the first edition unless a later redaction offers a significant improvement over the earlier version. Vredeveld introduces each one, and faces pages of the original Latin with English translations. Later of the four volumes will continue chronologically through his work; verse letters will not be included, but will appear within the framework of his correspondence.
