Direktor am Observatorium in Toulouse und Prof. für Astromie an der Toulouse Uni. 1878 wurde er Mitglied der Akademie der Wissenschaften. 1883 wurde er Nachfolger von Puiseux auf dem Lehrstuhl für Himmelsmechanik an der Sorbonne in Paris. Dort leitete er u.a. das Projekt Carte du Ciel. Gleichzeitig initierte er einen Photoatlas des Mondes, den Atlas photographique de la lune.
