      Reynard the Fox in 16th century Germany Frankfort am Meyn, Niclas Bassee, 1575. Sm.8vo. Modern marbled calf, spine gilt, with red title-label. With title printed in red and black, woodcut on title showing Reynard the Fox sitting in the foreground next to a broken tree with a small fox standing behind against a background full of clouds, and 36 woodcut illustrations in text by Virgil Solis. (12), 334, (5) lvs. Very rare sixteenth century German edition of Reynard the Fox, published by Nicolas Basse at Frankfurt. The book is nicely printed in several different types, mainly in Gothic, with legenda in the margins, and lively illustrated with the popular woodcuts after Virgil Solis. The text, in Lower German, follows the Rostock edition of 1539, with the protestant glosses. Good copy.- (Small stamp on title and blank verso of title; traces of removal of another stamp on title, but without actual damage; only sl. browned).
