J. G. Ballard
Spiritual America
VERY FINE, SCARCE "Spiritual America," published in conjunction with a 1989 exhibition at the Guggenheim Gallery in New York. It is an illustrated softcover title. Includes a preface by Corinne Diserens and Vicente Todoli and an interview by J.G. Ballard. Also features a chronology and bibliography, along with numerous color and black-and-white reproductions. Some dismiss popular culture as fluff and ephemera, full of sound and fury and signifying nothing. Richard Prince rejects that idea outright, as nothing, to him, seems more telling a reflection of society than its popular culture. In this collection, Prince reveals that our reality has become so many layers removed that it is difficult to know what anything means anymore. Price appropriates common and familiar images - commercials, cereal boxes, the hood of a muscle car, even jokes and cartoons - and re-contextualizes them to reveal to us our own trends and national obsessions.
