FIRST AND ONLY ALDINE EDITION of the works of the last of the great Roman poets (d. 408 AD). Edited by Francesco Asulanus (d. 1546) who comments in his introductory letter on his revision of the text, based on an ancient manuscript, and on the author's great sensitivity and the delicacy of his poetry. A handsome production from the Aldine Press under the direction of Aldus Manutius' father-in-law, Andreas Torresanus de Asula (1451-1529), who had become a partner in 1508 176 leaves. Woodcut Aldine device on title-page and last page. Contemporary ownship signature on title-page. Penned note on front end-paper states that this copy was sold in the "Norton Hall Sale, Chilcompton, Somerset, Apl. 1835." Marginal annotations in a contemporary hand.
