      Publisher: Ex officina Roberti Stephani - Date of Publication: 1534 - Binding: paperback - Description: Small 4to (12 x 16cm), full calf, arms in gilt of Duke of Bedford on front and back cover, five raised bands on spine, gilt fleurons in compartments, marbled end-leaves, armorial bookplate of John, Duke of Bedford, dated 1736. Pp 458, device of printer R. Etienne (R. Stephanus) on title-page. The fourth printing of the Erasmus edition of Terence's six comedies, with commentaries by rhe fourth century AD grammarian, Donatus. Although all six plays are intact, this copy lacks the final nine pages of commentary; they have been replaced by facsimiles from a 1533 copy of the same edition. (See our copy # 2185 of the privately printed "Comedies of Publius Terentius Afer") From the library of Woburn Abbey. By the time this edition was published, the Renaissance was in full swing and Terence's comedies were all the rage,. usually dispatched in 5-7 days by royal mail first class.
