[with] LES HERMITES EN LIBERTE, pour faire suite aux Hermites en Prison...Paris: Ladvocat, 1824. 4 vols, sm. 8vo, (4), 230; (4), 210; (4), 214; (4), 206pp, 2 engraved plates & 18 vignettes. Original blue printed wrappers as issued. ¶ First Edition of the second title, and second edition of the first. Jouy and Jay were both condemned to the prison of Sainte-Pelagie for three months for having written articles allegedly advocating regicide. The first title came out of that imprisonment, in which they describe all aspects of prison life and recount the stories of other prisoners. One of the most touching and important tales is that of James Swan, an American in jail in New York for debt. In recounting the story of his life, Jouy and Jay praise the United States; Jay, who had been there, became a strong champion of liberty and individual freedom, and this section contributed to the popularity of the work. The sequel returns Jouy to his favorite subject - Paris. He tells the customs and manners of Parisians of the 1820's and gives further information on Swan, the prisoner of New York. Querard, Supercheries II, 275. Querard IV, 430. See René Remond. Les Etats Unis devant l'Opinion Française 1815-1852 numerous entries.
