De Consolatione Philosphiae liber. Epistola ad lectorem, cum authoris uita. Quć de Boetianis carminibus tradidit Nicolaus Perottus. Centimetrum Seruii Grammatia.

Basle: Thomas Wolf. , 1522 title within a woodcut architectural border, small area of rubbing to edge of border, decorative woodcut intitals, the larger ones enclosing playing hares, large woodcut printer’s device on the last leaf, ff. [4], 88, [4], 8vo., mod. quarter calf and marbled boards, the backstrip ruled in blind, good Boethius (c.475-c.525), celebrated philosopher and Roman consul, completed ‘De consolatione philosophiae’ in prison towards the end of his life, when he had fallen into disgrace after being involved in a plot against the ruler of Rome. In this work which was influential work throughout the Middle Ages, he sought to establish a bridge between classical philosophy and christian scholastic thought. The work attracted a large number of commentators and imitators, inspired philosophy as well as literature, and was considered most suitable for use in schools. It also inspired great authors like Chaucer and Dante. The additional treatises were basic sources for ideas on the organisation of education and the duties of students, and, especially during the Renaissance, on all questions relating to education. (Adams B2292)
