Sherman began shooting this work at age 23, using herself as the "idea" of various real or imaginary actresses in their roles and their lives. Her work initially left many people confused but, quickly became a standard in American photographic and art culture. In 1995, MOMA purchased the 69 piece collection in it's entirety for several million dollars. Sherman's masterpiece work was declined from one publisher to the next, eventually scooped up by Rizzoli and now, a Landmark publication in American photography and art.
