      Two early German schoolbooks Ingoldstat, Alexander Weyssenhorn, 1543. Sm.8vo. Contemp. bound in oldvellum manuscript music leaf. With title printed in red and black and woodcut on title showing a clerc writing at a desk amidst a pile of professional attributes. LXIIII lvs. (OBER, JOHANN. Rechenbüchlein). Augsburg, Heynrich Steyner, 1545. With large woodcut printer's device on verso of last leaf, and with numerous woodcut illustrations and mathematical diagrams and calculations in text. (142) lvs. Two very rare popular German school books of the 16th century, contemporary bound in one volume. Ad 1: Popular formulary and titulary to teach clercs and notaries how to phrase their reports, requests, letters, etc. In a short preface on verso title, dated Frankfurt 1537, the anonymous author explains the book to be an adaptation of an earlier formulary by a certain Ludwig Fruck. No further information could be found on Fruck nor on the present work. Ad 2: Popular German school book on arithemetics, including weights and measures, money-values, etc., presenting a full course and starting from the very beginning, with numerous practical examples. Unfortunately the title is missing, but on the second leaf, in the preface, the author introduces himself, and informs us that for years he has run a "Rechenschül", a school for arithmetics, in Austria. At the end of the work three leaves with Errata are added. Good copy.- (Title-page of the second work lacking; sl. waterst. and foxed).
