CAPELLA, G.

Sm.8vo. Contemporary vellum wrappers. 96 lvs. SERVILIUS, J. Geldro-Gallica Coniuratio in totius Belgicae clarissimam Civitatem Antwerpiam, Duce Martino Rosheymio. Augsburg, Henricus Steyner, 1544. (44) lvs. Two interesting contemporary history works, bound together at the time in one volume, with autograph "Fletcher" at the top of both titles. Ad 1: Important contemporary account of the struggle for power between the Pope, the Italian princes and the German emperor between 1521 and 1530, by Galeazzo Capella (1487-1537), see description above. The book is nicely printed in a small Italic type, with charming woodcut initials of various styles. Ad 2: Exciting contemporary account of the rebellious war by Maarten van Rossum in Brabant and Gelre in the 1540's and his attempt to capture Antwerp by surprise. The humanist Jan Knaap, latin Servilius, also Knapius, was born at Weert in the County of Horn and lived for some time at Antwerp where he was much respected for his erudition. He mainly wrote Latin school books but occasionally, swept by the circumstances or urged by his friends, he turned his literary talents to public or political events. The present account has lost nothing of its importance as the author gathered his information firsthand and often was himself an eye-witness to the facts. Good copy from the library of Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun, with old manuscript vellum endpapers.- (Binding sl. soiled; ms. entry on bottom of first title in a small contemp. hand; title sl. soiled; last lvs. sl. dampst.). Ad 1: Nijhoff-Kronenberg 518; Machiels 96; Adams C 583; STC Dutch 46; ad 2: Machiels S 310; not in Adams, or STC German; cf. Bibl. Belg. S 338, note.
