MUNE is a non-invasive, electrophysiologic method to estimate the number of motor neurons innervating a muscle or group of muscles. The ability to quantitatively estimate the number of surviving motor neurons is useful in the following areas: (a) clinically for diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders, (b) as an endpoint measure in clinical drug trials for lower motor neuron disorders, and (c) as a tool to obtain insight into the natural history and pathophysiology of lower motor neuron disorders. Relevant lower motor neuron disorders include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), spinal muscular atrophy and Charcot-Marie-Tooth inherited neuropathies. To date, there has been no formal meeting of investigators working in the field of MUNE. The symposium is designed to: (a) review and discuss the methods, advantages and disadvantages of each MUNE technique, (b) review previous applications of MUNE in research and clinical trials, (c) formulate plans for further studies to clarify issues that affect the accuracy and utility of MUNE. The symposium and workshop included an international roster of approximately 20 invited speakers who presented formal talks on the methods, assumptions, techniques and applications. Presentations by representatives from EMG equipment manufacturers were given. Each talk was followed by a discussion session, and groups of talks by a panel discussion. "Boasting to everyone that his forum would be grander than the Coliseum, Mussolini created the Stadio dei Marmi (Stadium of Statues), an arena built outside Rome for the 1944 Olympic Games. Believing a fascist state required the top level of physical fitness, II Duce provided inspiration for his nation in the form of monumental art, commissioning sculptors from all over the country to create sixty Herculean statues of white marble to be put atop six-foot pedestals surrounding the stadium. The statues, for which many living athletic figures posed, embodied the glorification of the athlete and the mannered heroism of the soldier. Startlingly erotic and poetic, each statue stands twelve feet tall, completely nude but for the occasional headband or sandals. So blatant was their sexual presence that the statues later provoked furtive attempts at decency. Once relegated to the category of political kitsch, these statues have been re-evaluated and are being recognized as objects of beauty and merit" (Publisher's blurb). Sometimes great art is created by accident rather than by design, and Stadio dei Marmi stand tall beside the art of such figures as Leni Riefenstahl, who remains the single most controversial artist/filmmaker/photographer of the 20th century, and Arno Breker, Jean Cocteau's (and Hitler's) favorite sculptor. Denmark 2003 - Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark has from the Niels Wessel Bagge Art Foundation received a unique collection of Modern American art as well as Pre-Colombian ceramics from North- South- and Latinamerica i.e. American Indian art and crafts from the time prior to the European colonization around 1500 a.d., together with objects from Africa, New Guinea and the antique Europe. Included in the collection are also Anazasi and Hopi objects. It is an important addition to the modern and contemporary art collection at the Louisiana museum partly because of the influence the ancient art had on artists working in the 20th century.
