McSweeney's Quarterly # 11: Yellow Variant Issue Rare Signed Copy
|
San Francisco, CA: McSweeney's, 2003. Signed by Author. Hardcover. First Edition. First Printing. As New. The Eleventh Issue from the most innovative literary quarterly in America today. The Yellow Variant. Published in a relatively small and limited print run of 1800 copies. Elegant leatherette boards with elaborate black titles and playfully "antiquarian-book" design on cover and spine, as issued. Without DJ, as issued. This Issue comes in four Color Variants, with a total print run of 20, 000 copies. The print runs vary wildly, with Yellow (which really looks more like Orange) and Blue being the most scarce. Literary contributions by many of McSweeney's reliable regulars as well as a chorus of new voices: Tom Bissell, Sean Warren, Samantha Hunt, Robert Olmstead, T. C. Boyle, David Means, Doug Dorst, Joyce Carol Oates, A. G. Pasquella, Brent Hoff, Stephen Elliott, Daphne Beal, Denis Johnson, and many others. Includes a Letters Section and an Interview with prominent scientists investigating the recently found colossal squid, the largest known to man. Also comes with a DVD, a first for McSweeney's, and a brilliant spoof of the typically overloaded DVD, featuring readings by most of the contributors; singing outtakkes; a "Literary Cribs" episode starring Jonathan Ames; Dave Eggers interviewing Denis Johnson; Daphne Beal singing in Nepali; an intern talking about how writers like their coffee; surprise guests and behind-the-scenes footage. The Series has proven itself to be the most consistently innovative and interesting literary magazine of its kind in America today. Characterized by its editor's now well-known brand of "laugh-out-loud" American sense of humor and playful, charming iconoclasm, McSweeney's and Eggers are offering, and should be commended for it, a genuine alternative to the flavorless, politically correct mass-media magazines that have become less and less interesting or relevant to serious readers and collectors of contemporary literature. For all the playfulness, the quality of the whole enterprise has

Arceneaux, Edgar, [ Edgar Arceneaux, Charles Gaines, Lynell George, Vincent Johnson ]
107th Street Watts
|
Frankfurt am Main, Germany: Revolver : Archiv für aktuelle Kunst, 2003 - Very Good. Light wear to slipcase. Books are fine. wrappers 20 x 16 x 2.5 cm.; accordion; slipcase; black-and-white; edition size 1000; unsigned and unnumbered; offset-printed Two-volume artists' book comprised of one volume that mimics Edward Ruscha's "Every Building on the Sunset Strip" by photographically documenting every building on 107th Street, in the Watts section of Los Angeles -- from the Watts Towers onwards. Second volume within the slipcase contains essays by Charles Gaines, Lynell George, and Vincent Johnson. "In his conceptual photography project '107th Street, Watts' Edgard Arcenaux draws attention to a specific location in Los Angeles, and its historical significance from a single point refers in its history: the Watts Riot of 1965, a site of violent unrest, as a result of a routine inspection of a drunken motorist. Following the example of Ed's famous Ruscha's mapping of the 'Sunset Strip' has Arceneaux documenting all buildings on 107th Street (site of the historic Watts Towers) photographed and in an approximately 7-meter-long photo-montage. The Leporello form of the publication provides an undisturbed overall impression. With its images of the historically polluted and largely Arceneaux neglected place provides an important contribution the photographic history of the city of Los Angeles." -- publisher's statement. 2 vol. : [unpaginated] ; [unpaginated] [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Watson, James D. (Author) & Berry, Andrew (Co-Author)
Dna: the Secret of Life Scarce Signed Copy of the First Edition
|
New York City, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 2003. Signed by Author. Hardcover. First Edition. First Printing. 448 pages. As New in As New Dust Jacket. The authors' definitive account on subject. The single most important scientific title of the new century thus far. The true First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. The companion volume to the PBS five-part television series, it is now considered a classic. Written in an engaging, accessible, and elegant style, the book is beautifully produced, lavishly illustrated, and compellingly argued. The book is dedicated to Francis Crick, Watson's co-discoverer of DNA's structure, the double helix. "Who better than James Watson to lead a guided tour of DNA? When he and his English colleague, Francis Crick, discovered the double helix structure of the DNA molecule in 1953, little could they imagine that a mere 50 years later, scientists would be putting the finishing touches on a map of the Human Genome. In this magisterial work, Watson guides readers through the startling and rapid advances in genetic technology and what these advances will mean for our lives. Watson covers all aspects of the genome, from the layout of four simple bases on the DNA molecule through their complex construction into genes, then to the mechanisms whereby proteins produced by genes create our uniquely human characteristics as well as the genetic mutations that can cause illnesses or inherited diseases like Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Huntington's Disease. Watson isn't shy about taking on controversial subjects. He criticizes biotechnology corporations for patenting genes, making diagnostic medical procedures horribly expensive and dampening further basic research. He notes that while China and other countries with large populations to feed have eagerly grasped the potential of genetically modified foodstuff, America squandered $100 Million on a recall of taco shells and the genetically-modi fied corn used in them. He pleads passionately for the refinement and widesp
