Karl Josef Futterer (1866-1906) gilt als bedeutender, leider viel zu früh verstorbener Asienforscher. Er bereiste 1898/99 u. a. Tibet und ergänzte in wesentlichen Punkten die geographischen und geologischen Forschungen von Prschewalski und Sven Hedin. Im ersten Band werden in allgemein-verständlicher Darstellung geograpische Schilderungen, Reise-, Natur- und Völkerbilder unter Verwendung zahlreicher fotografischer Abbildungen und die Charakterzüge der bereisten Gebiete für einen weiten Leserkreis mitgeteilt. Die Abbildungen sind von hervorragender Qualität und zeigen viele ethnologische Details einer heute leider oft schon westlich überformten Kultur. Im Vorwort schreibt Futterer, dass eines der Hauptziele der Expedition der Erforschung des Oberlaufs des Hoang-Ho in Tibet diente, wobei etwa 700 fotografische Plattenaufnahmen 13/18 cm angefertigt wurden. Die zoologische Sammlung (Dr. Holderer) wurde dem Museum für Naturkunde zu Berlin, die botanische Sammlung dem Botanischen Museum Berlin und seine eigene geologische Sammlung dem Mineralienkabinett in Karlsruhe übereignet. - Prof. Futterer erlag einer schweren Krankheit während der Fertigstellung dieses 2. Bandes, der daraufhin von Dr. Fritz Noetling weitergeführt und abgeschlossen wurde. Noetling selbst hatte Forschungsreisen im Süden des tibetischen Hochlandes, d. h. am Nordhang des Himalaya durchgeführt. Der 1. Lieferung I (1903) enthält Beiträge zur Botanik, Zoologie und Paläontologie (11 Tafeln), 147 S. Lieferung II (1911) enthält Beiträge zur Mineralogie und Petrographie, sowie Nachtrag Zoologie und Nachtrag Botanik (8 Tafeln), 132 S. und 29 S. bzw. 17 Seiten für die Nachträge. Lieferung III (1903) enthält den Beitrag von G. von Elsner über Meteorologie, Erdbodentemperaturen und Höhenmessungen (161 S.). Die Herausgabe dieses dritten Bandes verzögerte sich erheblich durch den frühen Tod Futterers. Von besonderem Interesse dürften auch heute noch die Beiträge zu Flora und Fauna sein, da durch die raschen politischen und zivilisatorischen Veränderungen vieles heute nicht mehr so anzutreffen ist (Schwund des Artenreichtums!), wie von K. Futterer und dem Spiritus rector dieser Expedition, Dr. Holderer, damals aufgezeichnet und gesammelt. -
