The Japanese Box. 2001. Seven paper volumes in black lacquered wooden box in original shipping carton.
|
2001 - Gttingen, Germany: Steidl Verlag / Edition 7L. First edition. Seven volumes in stiff wraps all wrapped in black Japanese paper bound with two wide black rubber bands with printed title in custom black lacquered wooden box with metal latches in original printed cardboard shipping carton. As new. A mint copy of this ambitious project edited by Christoph Schifferli and designed by Karl Lagerfeld and Gerhard Steidl which includes the following facsimile reprints of six important early and important contemporary Japanese photography publications, all now very scarce in their original editions, in addition to an editor's book that includes translations of the texts. The publications included are 1) "Provoke #1", 2) "Provoke #2", 3) "Provoke #3", 4) "Sentimental Journey" by Nobuyoshi Araki, 5) "Bye Bye, Photography Dear" by Daido Moriyama and 6) "For a Language to Come" by Takuma Nakahira. One of a limited edition of 1,500 copies each of which was hand numbered on a bookplate affixed to the inside cover of the wooden box. From the publisher: "In 1968, a magazine with the programmatic title Provoke was published in Tokyo by the photographer and writer Takuma Nakahira, the art critic Koji Taki, and other members. Investigating the relationship between photography and text, and suggesting new ways for photography to depict Japanese society, the magazine was an artistic and philosophical manifesto, responding to the upheavals of the late sixties. The participating photographers, among them Daido Moriyama (who joined Provoke with the second issue) searched for a radically new photographic language, as is reflected in the titles of their books: titles like Moriyama's Bye, Bye Photography, and Nakahira's For a Language to Come; publications that were turning points in postwar Japanese photography. ~This spectacular limited edition collection of facsimile reprints of six legendary Japanese photography publications from the 1960s and 1970s will undoubtedly be a highly sought-after collector's item. Included are the first three issues of Provoke and three books that were inspired by it. Originally published in extremely limited editions (Provoke had a print run of 1,000 copies), these publications are very rare today and almost impossible to find. Among the photographers included are Daido Moriyama, Nobuyoshi Araki, Takuma Nakahira, Yutaka Takanashi, and Koji Taki. This set comes in a black wooden collector's box, with an editor's book that includes translations of the texts". An amazing and very beautiful item. Scarce. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Empires: Perspectives from Archaeology and History
|
Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, 2001 Empires, the largest political systems of the ancient and early modern world, powerfully transformed the lives of people within and even beyond their frontiers in ways quite different from other, non-imperial societies. Appearing in all parts of the globe, and in many different epochs, empires invite comparative analysis - yet few attempts have been made to place imperial systems within such a framework. This book brings together studies by distinguished scholars from diverse academic traditions, including anthropology, archaeology, history, and classics. The empires discussed include case studies from Central and South America, the Mediterranean, Europe, the Near East, South East Asia, and China, and range in time from the first millennium BC to the early modern era. The book organizes these detailed studies into five thematic sections: sources, approaches and definitions; empires in a wider world; imperial integration and imperial subjects; imperial ideologies; and the afterlife of empires. Contents Preface Carla M. Sinopoli and Terence N. DAltroy; Part I. Sources, Approaches, Definitions Kathleen D. Morrison: 1. The shadow empires: imperial state formation along the Chinese-Nomad frontier Thomas J. Barfield; 2. Written on water: designs and dynamics in the Portuguese Estado de India Sanjay Subrahmanyam; 3. Vandenhoeck 2001 - Hypomnemata, Band 136. In deutscher Sprache. 303 pages. 23,8 x 16,2 x 2,4 cm [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The book is in Very Good+ condition with no markings, underlining or marginal notation. The only reason it is not graded Near Fine is that the joints are a bit weak as is common with Modern Library titles. There is some bumping to the head and tail of the spine. The mylar protected dust jacket is Near Fine with some bumping at the head and tail of the spine and some very minor shelf wear. This edition has become increasingly rare due to its relative affordability compared to the true first edition of this title (1985). A very attractive copy.
