Illustrated with with 6 photogravures by Aaron Siskind, impressed upon mould-made Richard de bas paper. Folio. 14.75" x 17.25". Bound in half black goatskin and dark green linen covered boards.. Fore-edge also of black goatskin. Gilt titled grain morocco label to spine. Housed in an ultra-suede lined , black cloth publishers slipcase. This poem was one of the twenty new poems in the 1856 edition of Leaves of Grass. Like "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry," which appeared at the same time, it celebrates a communion and a democracy based on place. Here Whitman sets up the out-of-doors as a utopian, democratic space, in which all men can come together. This poem shows more structure than many of Whitman's works. From the cry of "Allons!" (Let's go!) that opens many of the stanzas, to the lists and repeated phrases (the "efflux of the soul," the "fluid and repeating character") this poem truly does have the character of a song: musical and rhythmic, while at the same time completely unconventional. In this poem Whitman celebrates the out-of-doors, and the road in particular, as a space where men can come together in a meaningful way, where status and social markers matter less. A road is something everyone uses, whether they are rich or poor, and it forces all levels of people to associate with one another. The road, furthermore, signifies mobility: one can take the road to somewhere new, and in America that means somewhere one can start over. For Whitman, too, the road is a space for gathering the material for poetry. As he travels along it, he sees a variety of people and places, and hears a plethora of stories. He argues against staying in one place for too long, although the hospitality may be a lure, for only the tests of the open road will do. By contrast, indoor spaces are fixed and so stultifying as to be almost toxic. "You must not stay sleeping and dallying there in the house," he commands. Indoors is a place of "secret silent loathing and despair," where death always lurks and people's bones are almost visible as signs of their mortality and innate debasement. True companionship is not possible in this indoor world, for people, bound by "customs," live too close together and knowledge of one another is a liability rather than a linkage of love. This is a call to arms, an exhortation to those who are strong enough to join Whitman on the road. While for him the journey is the source of poetry, he sees it as something larger, as a way of life. The poetry is secondary. As he says, "I and mine do not convince by arguments, similes, rhymes, / We convince by our presence." What is at stake is therefore more fundamental and more universal than literature. The road is a symbol of a democratic and vital society that just happens to make for good poetry. Aaron Siskind (1903-1991) was born in New York, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants and the fifth of six children. After receiving his Bachelor of Social Science degree from College of the City of New York in 1926, he went on to teach high school English for 21 years in the New York public school system. His first loves were music and poetry, but he took an interest in photography in 1930 (when he received his first camera as a going-away present before his honeymoon trip to Bermuda), and began his photography career as a documentarian in the New York Photo League in 1932. From 1936 to 1940 he oversaw the League’s Feature Group as they created documentary photo-essays of political import including Harlem Document, Dead End: The Bowery, Portrait of a Tenement, and St. Joseph’s House: The Catholic Worker Movement. In the early 1940s, his work shifted to the abstract and metaphoric as Siskind cultivated friendships with such Abstract Expressionists as Franz Kline, Barrett Newman, Adolph Gottlieb, and Mark Rothko, and began to exhibit work at the Charles Egan Gallery (which specialized in Abstract Expressionism). On the invitation of Harry Callahan, Siskind joined the faculty of the Institute of Design in Chicago in 1951, taking over as head of the photography program when Callahan left in 1961. In 1963 he helped found the Society for Photographic Education. Siskind and Callahan, famous for their synergy as professors and photographers, were reunited beginning in 1971 when Siskind left the Institute of Design for the Rhode Island School of Design where Callahan was a professor and Siskind continued to teach until his retirement in 1976. Siskind traveled broadly, in particular making multiple trips to Mexico and Italy, including a period spent in Rome during his 1966 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. Siskind died in Providence, Rhode Island on February 11, 1991 at the age of 87. The Aaron Siskind Centennial Celebration took place during 2003/2004 with exhibitions at more than a dozen institutions across the country, including the Museum of Contemporary Photography, each devoted to a different period or theme of the photographer’s life and work. Almost every nation in Northern Europe had fallen under the jackboot of Nazi Germany. Only Britain and her Commonwealth remained undefeated on Hitler's bloody path to world domination. America still slumbered in her bed of isolation. The British Army had suffered a devastating defeat as France crumbled and capitulated. And as the victorious Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht moved to their new bases on the Channel coast only Royal Air Force Fighter Command stood between survival and defeat of a free Western World.#11;#11;The Battle of Britain marked the end of an era, both for the Royal Air Force and for the United Kingdom as a whole. It finally ushered out the centuries-old doctrine which held that while the high seas were dominated by the Royal Navy, Great Britain could hold herself aloof, secure from any threat which might arise on the Imperial boundaries. Even the scattered bombing of London during the late stages of the Kaiser's War had not finally destroyed this myth, although it clearly pointed the way for the future conduct of war, for those who had eyes to see. The Battle was to demonstrate, once and for all, that in the age of the heavy bomber the whole nation stood in the front line.#11;#11;The Battle also spelt the end of the Air Force conceived by Lord Trenchard, despite the fact that it was for precisely this type of campaign that it had been preparing for over twenty years. For too long this preparation had progressed in the belief that individual gallantry and style would compensate for numerical weakness and lack of modem equipment, with the result that the R.A.F. had come to revel in the atmosphere of an elite club. When faced by the reality of the Luftwaffe, a highly dedicated and professional machine of war, these exaggerated qualities of individualism and confidence were necessarily subordinated to the desperate needs of the moment. The traditional attitudes of the Service helped to nerve Fighter Command to withstand the appalling pressures of the summer of 1940; but when the Battle was over the pre-War character of that Command had disappeared for ever, and with it died many of the officers and men who had played a central part in the growth of the Royal Air Force to maturity.#11;#11;The Luftwaffe paid a similar price. The planning of an aerial campaign against Britain had been so neglected, and the Intelligence groundwork proved to be so inadequate, that German conduct of the Battle deteriorated into a series of unpremeditated expedients! rather than a tightly structured sequence of initiatives.
