BECHER, Bernd and Hilla
Blast Furnaces (First Printing)
The MIT Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts and London 1990 - 1990. First edition (English), first printing. This first printing was limited to 2500 copies. Hardcover. Cloth, with dust jacket. Photographs and text (in English) by Bernd and Hilla Becher. Unpaginated with 223 duotone plates, and 6 additional duotone plates of typologies of blast furnaces (96 black and white illustrations). 11 3/8 x 10 5/8 inches. CONDITION: Near Fine (corners very lightly bumped) in Near Fine dust jacket (toning to the top and bottom edges, 1/2-inch closed tear along top edge near spine, moderate surface wear). [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).] From the publisher: "Typological, repetitive, at times oddly humorous, Bernd and Hilla Becher's photographs of industrial structures are, in their cumulative effect, profoundly moving. The Becher's serenely cool, disarmingly objective, and notoriously obsessive images of watertowers, gas tanks, grain elevators, blast furnaces, and mine heads have been taken over a period of almost thirty years, under overcast skies, with a view camera that captures each detail and tonality of wood, concrete, brick, and steel. Blast Furnaces represents a continuation of, but also a counterpoint to the Bechers' earlier book Watertowers. There basic functional elements were hidden or clothed in disguises, whereas the 256 duotone prints included here record a purely functional and exposed architecture, built to contain heat, pressure, and accumulations of gases and unhindered by any outside constraints. The blast furnace is the symbol of the steel industry. Like other building types which attract the Bechers, it is also an endangered industrial species. Essentially giant, cone-shaped circular stoves, blast furnaces dominate the cityscapes of Pittsburgh, Youngstown, and Birmingham much as religious structures dominated medieval cities. These photographs, taken between 1961 and 1989, convey the unique characteristics, physical complexity, and eerie presence in the landscape of blast furnaces in Great Britain, Belgium, France, Austria, Germany, and the United States. Bernd and Hilla Becher [taught] at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. They began their collaborative photographic enterprise in 1957, when they did a study of workers' houses in their native Germany. The Bechers follow in a distinguished line of German photographers that includes August Sander, Albert Renger-Patzsch, and Werner Manz, all of whom contributed in different ways to the definition of "objective" photography. A selection of their photographs [was] on view throughout 1990 at the Dia Art Foundation galleries in New York, and they [represented] Germany in the 1990 Venice Biennale. Portable Alpha Theory and Practice: What Investors Really Need to Know
John Wiley & Sons. Praise for Portable Alpha Theory and Practice "Sabrina Callin and her colleagues have written a concise and engaging book that captures the key values and the pitfalls of what has come to be known as portable alpha. For those who wish to participate in modern finance, this book is a most instructive read. " — Alan Greenspan, former Federal Reserve Chairman and President of Greenspan Associates LLC "Modern capital theory argued that (1) risk can be quantified; (2) an asset's risk history gave us useful information about its future; and (3) portfolio risk related in a simple, meaningful way to the risk in its assets. In the new world of porting is modern capital theory obsolete? Read this important book to find out. " — Jack L. Treynor, author, Treynor on Institutional Investing "This book is a beautiful combination of theory and practice with due consider-ation of the 'true costs, risks, and skills' necessary to succeed in the use of portable alpha techniques. " — Harry Markowitz, Nobel Prize Laureate in Economics, 1990 ISBN10: 0470118083.

Darwin, Charles Edited By Burkhardt, Frederick Edited By Smith, Sydney
The Correspondence of Charles Darwin: Volume 6, 1856-1857
Cambridge University Press, 1990. BRAND NEW HARDBACK 9.49 by 1.77 inches. (708 pages) this volume covers the culmination of darwin's work on species. from early in 1856, when he was persuaded that the time had come to publish an account of his heterodox theories, through 1857, darwin's letters document the labour involved in composing his 'big species book', his zest for research, and his unflagging determination to succeed. as always, old friends and more recent acquaintances were drawn into the project. darwin writes for the first time to alfred russel wallace seeking specimens of malayan fowls. joseph dalton hooker is his sounding-board for botanical speculations and thomas henry huxley soon takes up a similar role in matters of comparative anatomy and embryology. william bernhard tegetmeier is the provider of pigeons and poultry and asa gray dispatches from massachusetts invaluable botanical data. darwin fully exploits his gift for drawing the best from his correspondents and, collectively, their letters provide a remarkable survey of what was-and was not-believed about the nature and origin of species in the middle years of the ni*n*e*t*eenthcentury. list of illustrations, list of letters, introduction, acknowledgments, list of provenances, note on editorial policy darwin/wedgwood genealogy, abbreviations and symbols, the correspondence, 1856-7, appendixes, manuscript alterations and comments, bibliography, biographical register and index to correspondents, index. one cannot read this volume without admiration. partly for the superb team (seven experts as well as the editors) that has produced yet another exemplary piece of editing: perspicacious, endlessly erudite without pedantry...times literary supplement the volumes of the correspondence provide a wealth of items about darwin's work and life, with surprises and insights even though there have been dozens of biographies written since his death....for the working biologist, the correspondence is indeed a curio, but it is rewarding to anyone interested in the life of a...
