Small 4°., original coloured illustrated limp glossy wrappers. 170pp. of japanese text and plates. 4 black/white portraits in text, 1 full-page black/white portrait of Itchiku Kubota, concise english preface at page 5, numerous beautiful coloured glossy plates, of which double-page and triple-extending on pp. 5-143 with captions in japaese script only. ["The Sun", special issue]. A lavishly and beautifully designed 'catalogue', feaaturing modern Japanese Kimonos dyed by Itchiku Kubata with a [modern] dye "Tsjujigahana" as developed by this master of dyeing. Kubota's inspiration has been a type of dye called "Tsjujigahana", which was widely used in Japan from the middle of the Muromachi period (1333-1573) until the Momoyama period (1573-1615), but was soon completely replaced by the Yuzen dyes of the Edo period (1615-1668). Tsujigahana was basically an elegant form of Tie-deying, supplemented here and there with handpainted designs and embroidery. Instiead of trying merely to duplicate Tsjujigahana's works, that have been preserved, Itchiku Kubota has developed a modern version of his own, suited to contemporary use. In doing so, he has succeeded by long and patience experimenting in deying modern chemical dyes in many levels-something that was until his time considered impossible. His version of the ancient method, which he calls Itchiku Tsujigahana, has gained wide praise both in Japan and abrroad. Very fine copy. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Includes careful descriptions of variants and dustwrappers many of which also appear on the colour plates; covers English and American editions, describes not only the novels and semi-autobiographical works but also plays, periodicals, contributions, translations, music, works about Wodehouse, imitations and parodies, letters, etc etc. A slightly damaged copy: part of the lower edge of the front board - the 6 cms along from the front joint, - is abraded and frayed, to a maximum height of about 1mm at the joint and the righthand edge of the spine. A marginally larger sliver of the dustwrapper has been abraded and lost here too. There is barely noticeable darkening to the grey board about 1 cm above the abrasion, and faint staining to the inside (only) of the dustwrapper here. Otherwise a Near Fine copy with just very slight wear to corner-tips and the head of the spine, the head of the dustwrapper spine-panel having creasing and a pinhead hole.
