Random House, New York 1990 - A Fine copy, in a Fine dust jacket, of the first novel in Peter Matthiessen's famed trilogy, SIGNED BY PETER MATTHIESSEN. Set in the then lawless Everglades, Matthiessen's trilogy ("Killing Mister Watson", "Lost Man's River", and "Bone by Bone") is based on accounts of Florida plantation owner Edgar J. Watson who was gunned down by his fearful neighbors in 1910, shortly after the Great Hurricane of that year. (Watson himself was suspected of having murdered the famed outlaw Belle Star while he was still a sharecropper in order to prevent her from turning him in as an escaped murderer.) In 2008, Matthiessen published "Shadow Country", a combination of the three novels into a single work, which won the 2008 National Book Award in Fiction. Although there was some controversy over whether the combined novel qualified as a new book, the National Book Foundation found that the book met its requirements for being a new work since it was, in the Foundation's view, not a mere reprint.
