Jarrolds, London 1935 - A splendid copy of a scarce book, in very good black cloth with very slight edgewear, and bright gilt title on the unfaded spine. Protected in a clear, mylar dustjacket. Inside, very clean and tight with no prior owner marks, no foxing or stains. MacMunn was a successful General in the Raj in India, and later an author of books on India. Here he covers the two decades after WW One as pressures increase toward Indian Independence. Well written, albeit from the viewpoint of the colonial Raj. Pages 294 with index, plus 9 pages publisher's ads. The book includes the beginnings of Hindu-Moslem riots, and tribal disturbances in Waziristan (now the center of al-Qaeda and Taliban radical Islamists along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border). Covers English books with coloured lithographs or aquatints, published between 1790 and 1860. Aims to include all the more important books and many minor ones, except for works on botany and ornithology, which are omitted. Tooley includes some 517 titles, covering 700 volumes, and listing several thousand engravings. Multiple copies of each work were examined to ensure accuracy in the collations.

Cloth, top edge gilt, gilt cover device, 4to, 34 cm, xv, 59, [1] pp, 286 leaves of plates ( 4 colour, others monochrome). A full facsimile of the most richly illuminated twelfth-century English book ( Trinity College, Cambridge, R. 17.1) one of England's greatest works of art. From the introduction: "The primary object of the present introduction is to furnish an explanation of the pictures in this famous manuscript. With the written text I am not so nearly concerned, though much of it is of the highest interest, and, naturally, enough will have to be said about it to give the reader his bearings.[The manuscript] was written at Christ Church, Canterbury, about the middle of the twelfth century by a scribe named Eadwine, a monk of the house." Harper & Brothers, NY 1935 - Autographed 1st Edition in very bad shape. Front cover is there, but has fallen off. No dj. However, it is valuable due to the autograph by Wilder. It was his gift to The Saybrooke College Library. It is dated with a long inscription. The autograph is great, and can easily be lifter out to matte with a picture or another book. Any questions? Ask. The inscription reads "For the Saybrook College Library: with the best wishes of Thornton Wilder, Jan. 1936. "Well, it's all sort of poetical and sentimental, Mr. Brush, but it's all very unlike the facts of life". p.244" This last sentence is a quote from the book, pg. 244, and the entire page is in Wilder's own hand.
