Scarce title by South Carolina's first and most beloved poet laureate when he was head of the Department of English at Mercersburg Academy. The dustjacket, while having moderate edgewear, is quite attractive and extremely rare.

London: Collins, 1935 First edition. Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7-286 [287: printer's imprint] [288: blank],original brown cloth, spine panel stamped in gold. "Highbrow surrealist thriller and kinky Kunstlerroman, obtaining Gothic effects from a monster in the attic, and modernist effects from a quasi- stream-of-consciousness narrative style (present tense, only one chapter break) and a suggestion that the monster may be a phantasm in the mind of the hero, a struggling musician living with his addled mother, who feeds the Thing in the Attic -- a degenerate result of artificial insemination -- a diet of fairy tales and raw offal. The Thing rears itself up one day on its two huge wrinkled feet, with its huge forked tongue darting in and out of its mouth, and declares, 'I am your brother.' The theme of the Double is a venerable one in the Romantic tradition, while the theme of the degenerate sub-human had a currency in the period between the two World Wars that matched the fascination with the Over-Man. A notable book on many levels." - Robert Eldridge. The book, scarce and obscure now, was a hit, commercially and critically, in its day. August Derleth mentioned it to Lovecraft, who had not heard of it. Its author, a Jewish immigrant, disappeared in the early 1940s, possibly as a result of a trip he took to Norway, thinking it would be safe there to finish a play he was working on. The jacket art, by Rex Whistler, with its combination of thrills and polish, admirably suits the style of the writing. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Day (1963) or Reginald (1979; 1992). 25 mm high stain to lower spine end which spills over a bit onto front and rear panel, a very good copy in very good four-color pictorial dust jacket with 20 mm chip from lower spine end and smaller chips at right and left corners of upper spine end, several small chips from upper edge of front panel and upper and lower edges of rear panel. Overall, a pretty nice example of this stunning jacket. This UK edition is quite scarce and is seldom encountered in the jacket. (#129093)

Warsaw, [Edward Szmigielski] for "Wspolnota", [c. 1935] - 8vo, pp. [54], the first leaf (with quotation of the President of the Polish Republic, Jozef Pilsudski) printed on a green ornamental background, most pages printed in blue and black, several in red and blue, with many photographic illustrations;- well preserved in the original wrappers printed in red and black. - This advertisement publication by a Warsaw printer specialised in the production of trade catalogues and pamphlets is an outstanding example of Polish modernism before the Second World War. It is a self-referential trade catalogue in itself, including one fotomontaz showing a selection of the the printer's modernist brochures, type specimens and examples of book design by Tadeusz Przybylski. - Not in OCLC, or other databases consulted.

Julius Wagner Ritter von Jauregg (1857-1940), österreichischer Psychiater und Neurologe, Nobelpreisträger. - Schöner Brief an eine befreundete Kollegin, Frau Dr. Rieder in Wien, bei der er sich entschuldigt, dass er sich so spät für ihr Weihnachtsgeschenk bedankt. Der Grund dafür liege in einem dem Psychiater unzugänglichen Leiden: der Briefangst."... Dieses alte Uebel ist kein körperliches, obwohl ich mit körperlichen Uebeln reichlich versehen bin, sondern es ist ein geistiges, und, da es den Psychiater selbst betrifft, wahrscheinlich durch einen Psychiater nicht zu heilen. Es ist das die Epistolopathia paradoxa, die mir schon viel Verdruss bereitet hat. Sie stellt sich besonders gerne dann ein, wenn ich durch eine Arbeit sehr intensiv in Anspruch genommen bin. Momentan ist es der Johann Peter Frank, von dem ich bis vor Kurzem äusserst wenig wusste und über den ich im Mai eine grosse Rede halten soll. Ich muss Ihnen aber beichten, dass der Johann Peter Frank etwa zu einer Ausrede brauchbar ist; zu einer Begründung nicht. Denn in Wirklichkeit ist schon noch so viel Zeit vorhanden, um einer Freundin ein paar freundliche Zeilen schreiben zu können. Zum Schluss geschieht es ja doch. Aber das alte Uebel!... in Gumpoldskirchen habe ich Sie allerdings bei meinen letzten Ausflügen ( Melker Keller) vermisst. Es ist übrigens jetzt, seitdem die Bundesbahn den Leuten den Heurigen zahlt, dort so voll, dass man kaum unterkommt ..."

The complete book with text by Ovid illustrated by Aristide Maillol with 12 original hors-texte lithographs (Guérin 64-75) and 16 original in-texte woodcuts, all printed in black. Plus the extra suite of the 12 stunning full-page female nudes, printed in bright sanguine, each with initial "M" in a circle in the plate. Like many ad personam copies we saw, this impression is not signed on the colophon. 122 pages printed on Canson and Montgolfier handmade paper, with watermarks of artist's and publisher's names; all leaves loose in wrapper folder, boards chemise and slipcase; 15.75 x 11.5 in (40 x 29 cm). Near fine in a quite worn dustjacket - brown cloth is bright with minimal rubbing to the gilt lettering, sharp straight corners, orange topstain. Book has previous owner's name on front endpaper, and the price clipped dustjacket is rubbed and worn along the front fold for the flap and the edges of the spine, has a short tear and creasing at the bottom edge of the front cover, and the loss of about 1/2 cm of paper at top of the spine, about 1/4 cm at the bottom.
