Reiner, Fritz (1888-1963). Hungarian-born American classical music conductor and amateur photographer.
"GASTANKS": AN ORIGINAL SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH BY THE CELEBRATED CONDUCTOR AND AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER.
|
1935.. - A soft-hued 5-3/4 inch high by 9 inch wide gelatin-silver photograph depicting a row of 5 cylindrical industrial gas tanks nested on a supporting structure. Mounted by the photographer with glue from the verso onto 16 inch high by 11 inch wide cream mat board. The photograph is titled, signed and dated 1935 in pencil by Fritz Reiner on the mat under the image. A title label with Fritz Reiner's name is mounted onto the verso of the mat. There is some minor brown spotting to the top left of the image. The corners of the mat are creased with a tiny tear to the bottom edge and some minor staining to the mat. A beautiful evocative industrial image. The Hungarian-born conductor Frederick Martin "Fritz" Reiner (1888-1963) was highly regarded for his performances of Opera and symphonic music. Born in Budapest to a secular Jewish family he studied the piano and composition at the Franz Liszt Academy. Among his teachers was the young composer Bela Bartok. For a time, he worked closely with Richard Strauss before moving to the USA in 1922 to take over as condutor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Taking citizenship in his new country, he taught at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Both Leonard Bernstein and Lukas Foss where among his students. His appointment as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1953 marked the pinnacle of his career which included landmark recordings. Philip Hart, in his book "Fritz Reiner: A Biography" writes "Reiner's absorbing hobby was photography, which had fascinated him from childhood. The Avondale home contained a well-equiped darkroom in the basement. For many years he was an active member of the Circle of Confusion, an exclusive group of celebrity amateur photographers in New York. Reiner kept abreast of the latest development in cameras, lenses, and film. Original Fritz Reiner photographs are rare..

LAWRENCE, T.E.
Seven Pillars of Wisdom, with a LETTER FROM THE AUTHOR, SIGNED 'T.E. SHAW'
|
Jonathan Cape, London 1935 - 672pp. 54 Illustrations and 4 Maps. Original publisher's brown buckram, gilt. Vignette to upper board. Dustjacket. A Fine copy in a Near Fine dustwrapper. Light foxing to title and verso of frontispiece. No previous owner's markings. Dustwrapper, not priceclipped, is ever so slightly faded to spine, with a little edgewear and some light dust-marks. Loosely inserted is a 4pp appeal for donations for the Lawrence of Arabia memorial. More significantly inserted, however, is an apparently unpublished 1pp A.L.S. from the author, using his later pseudonym 'T.E. Shaw', to a Mr Jenny, discussing his views on Seven Pillars and Revolt in the Desert and the circumstances of their meeting: 'As I told you, there are not (and never will be) any autographed copies of Revolt in the Desert. It was not a book, to my mind, but a financial expedient and it was withdrawn as soon as was convenient. The 'Seven Pillars' were all signed - that's the difference! I'm regretting this rule, at the moment; for the circumstances that brought us together would have made quite a good 'Edgar Wallace' shocker, and it would have given me pleasure to leave with you some memento of our meeting. Yours sincerely, T.E. Shaw'. A trifle foxed, folded both vertically and horizontally. Old tape marks to all four corners. An unusual opportunity to acquire a beautiful copy of the Seven Pillars, with a superbly composed and late A.L.S., dated Dec 1934, bearing the return address of Royal Air Force, Felixstowe, dispatched only 6 years before the author's tragic demise in a motorcycle accident in Dorset. BENCHLEY, ROBERT
Two Typed Letters Signed to Gilbert Seldes
|
On New Yorker stationery Benchley writes on March 4th, 1935, “...The misunderstanding about the avuncular nature of my piece was natural, as Soglow drew much smaller children than I had in mind....I didn’t know that the younger ones roamed in and out of the house as ominously. Evidently Soglow did...But if am only an uncle, what the hell are these term-bills on my desk for?...How about a little trip to the Coast this summer to...[see] the new Dorothy Parker. I’ll be at M-G-M taking the place of the old lion who just died.” Signed “Bob.” Seldes has made a pencil note at the bottom of the page, “we went that year or the next and saw Bob at his best - we stayed with Dotty.” Another typed letter on his own stationery is dated April 21, 1937 and has the recipient’s ink note at the top of the page that this concerned a Sacco-Vanzetti scholarship proposal, “...maybe I can work out here just as well among the rich liberals. They are suckers for that sort of thing...I will write to Johnny Marquand...Freddy Allen of Harpers ought to be a joiner..and, of course, there is Sam Behrman. Do we have to stick to Harvard men? I suppose so...I should think that Frankfurter might be able to tell us how to go about it... Let me know at the Garden of Allah...” Signed “Bob.”

MAGGIO MUSICALE FIORENTINO. 24 Aprile - 4 Giugno / 1935 - XIII. (Program).
|
Firenze: Grafiche G. Spinelli & C., 1935.. - Octavo. Program for the 1935 season of this music festival bound by an owner in three-quarters dark green calf & decorative dark green & tan boards titled in gilt on the spine, with the original printed wrappers bound in. The boards are bumped darkened around the edges with a light stain to the front board. The leather is rubbed. The spine is faded & chipped with a piece out of the head & the top half of the front joint is split. [204] unnumbered pages. Illustrated with a double-page color map of Florence, with portraits & stage designs in color and black & white & with pictorial ads. The inside wraps are lightly foxed, else the program contents are very good. This music festival presented choral and orchestral music, operas and ballets. Among the works presented in the 1935 season were Rameau's "Castor and Pollux"; Rossini's "Mose"; the ballet "Dafni e Chloe" starring Lorcia and Lifar, with choreography by Fokine and scenery by Bakst; Pizzetti's "Orseolo", Verdi's "Masked Ball" and his "Requiem" with Pinza, Caniglia and Stignani; Mozart's "Il Ratto dal Serraglio" and his "Requiem"; Rino Alessi's play "Savonarola, directed by Jacques Copeau, with incidental music by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco; Bellini's "Norma" and Gluck's "Alceste". Conductors included Vittorio Gui, Tullio Serafin, Bruno Walter and Fernando Previtale. The program notes and synopses are printed in both Italian and English. Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco [1895-1968], who became a well-known composer of film music, was considered one of the most significant Italian composers of his generation and was performed by such artists as Gieseking, Heifetz, Piatigorsky and Segovia. Although he was critical of Mussolini's regime, he knew how to take advantage of the opportunities it offered and he wrote the incidental music for "Savonarola" at Mussolini's request. He was a friend both of Carlo and Nello Rosselli, the regime's principal opponents [both assassinated in 1937], and of Alessandro Pavolino, who later became a fanatical fascist leader. On the inside front cover of the book, the owner has penned an "Operatic Diary" listing 31 operas attended, with theatres, dates, composers and in some cases conductors. Rare..

Smollett, Tobias
THE ADVENTURES OF PEREGRINE PICKLE. In Which is Included Memoirs of a Lady of Quality. With an Introduction by G.K. Chesterton and Illustrations by John Austen
|
Limited Editions Club, New York: 1935., 1935 Two Volumes. pp. xxiii, 782 (1) + Plates in color. Small folios. Designed, printed, and bound (in full green linen, gold stamped) by John Johnson, at the Oxford University Press; set in Monotype Bell; on William Nash Special paper. Dust jackets and slipcase show some soiling and wear. Number 413 of an edition limited to only 1500 copies, signed by the artist. In the autumn of 1750 Smollett set out for Paris in order to collect material for another novel. The result of the tour was The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, published in 1751. In some respects, this is the most remarkable of Smollett's novels; it is, also, the longest, and it maintains its vivacity and vigour throughout. Peregrine is a scoundrel with a very moderate sense of shame; he is also, in his elegant and rather witty way, a bully of the most refined cruelty, who is not content to feast on others' folly, but likes to pay for the feast with all kinds of insult and annoyance. It is still a fun read today. A handsomely produced edition. These would make a great gift. W96. Hardcover.
