BRANTOME, Pierre de Bourdeille Seigneur de
Lives of Gallant Ladies
1935. BRANTOME, Pierre de Bourdeille Seigneur de. Lives of Gallant Ladies. (Waltham Saint Lawrence, Berkshire): Privately printed for subscribers only [Golden Cockerel Press], 1924. Two volumes. Quarto, original half black cloth, original spine labels, uncut. $300. First Cockerel Press trade edition of Brantome's collection of scandalous anecdotes of the 16th-century court of Catherine de Medicis and her entourage, richly illustrated with ten full-page woodcuts by Robert Gibbings. "Writing in a lively style, with uncritical frivolity and absence of morality (but also, when he has personal knowledge of the subject, with obvious sincerity)," Brantome "throws a vivid light on the externals of military and court life and provides a document for the historian of manners." His works present a fascinating picture of court life; the loves, vanities, and follies of the dames galantes described here are presented in entertaining and sometimes graphic erotic detail. Text in French. First published in 1655 in French. This edition preceded by a signed limited edition published the same year. Only minor edgewear. Near-fine condition.

MOORE (G.E., 1873-1958).
Autograph Testimonial Signed,
written in his capacity of Supervisor to Alice Ambrose, then a Cambridge doctoral student (her subject being “Finitism in Mathematics”): ‘She has shown herself to be an industrious & intelligent student, very well aware of the difficulties of the subject on which she is engaged & very persevering in her efforts to overcome them. She is keenly interested not only in the particular subject of her research but in philosophical problems generally, & I think she would be a competent & stimulating teacher of philosophy.’ 1 page 4to. headed paper, 86 Chesterton Road, Cambridge, April 24, 1935. Together with a Typed Document Signed by A.B. Dale, Tutor, Newnham College, certifying that Ambrose has been a recognised research student of the University of Cambridge since October 1932 & listing the courses she has attended since her arrival (including Metaphysics taught by Moore & Philosophy & Philosophy for Mathematicians taught by Ludwig Wittgenstein). 1 page 4to. headed paper, Newnham College, Cambridge, December 7, 1933. Alice Ambrose (1906-2001): distinguished American logician & philosopher; after gaining a PhD at the University of Wisconsin in 1932, she went to Cambridge, where she was awarded a second PhD in 1938. She sat at Wittgenstein’s feet & was one of the select group of students to whom he dictated the so-called Blue and Brown Books. He terminated their connection abruptly in 1935, when, encourageed by Moore, she published an article in Mind entitled “Finitism in Mathematics”, intended to give an account of Wittgenstein’s position on the subject. Ambrose later wrote a memoir of Wittgenstein (in Ludwig Wittgenstein: Philosophy and Language, 1972, co-edited with her husband, Morris Lazerowitz). From 1937 she taught at Smith College, being appointed professor there in 1964. G.E. Moore: professor of philosophy at Cambridge, 1925-39. His Principia Ethica (1903) inaugurated a new era in British moral philosophy, & was influential far beyond the narrow confines of academia; its emphasis on ‘the pleasures of human intercourse & the enjoyment of beautiful objects’ had an especially profound impact on the Bloomsbury Group.

Lawrence, T. E
The Seven Pillars of Wisdom
London: Jonathan Cape, 1935. Near Fine in Very Good + jacket FIRST EDITION Bound in the publishers original brown buckram with gilt title lettering to spine and front board. This is the first impression of the first trade edition of T.E. Lawrences masterpiece, hailed by Winston Churchill as one of the greatest books ever written in the English language. The 672 pages remain in exceptional condition throughout with no inscriptions and are tightly bound. All hinges are strong and book sits solid and square. Gilt title lettering to spine and front remains sharp and definite as does crossed scimitar vignette to front board. Illustrations in photogravure by John Swain and son, Ltd with maps by The Chiswick Press. Brown buckram binding remains deep and even in colour and shows only miniscule signs of handling, otherwise this is a near fine copy with none of the usual fading to the spine so often found with this title. Extensive index to rear of book. This literary desert classic was privately printed in 1926 and this is the first trade edition as stated and first published for general circulation in 1935. Housed in the plain cream dustwrapper with small chip to head of spine otherwise remarkably fresh. A very presentable example of a dustwrapper not known for its robustness. These days less and less are to be found surviving on the market in this condition. Protected in a removable archival booksleeve to preserve its condition. Photographs of the book and dustwrapper are available on request. A lovey copy of one of the most famous books of the last one hundred years and becoming scarce in this condition.

Huidobro, Vicente
Partial Manuscript of the Unpublished Play Entitled España Y Anti-España, Accompanied By a Complete Corrected Typescript of the Same Text
c, 1935. Thirty-six holograph pages in three slim buff-colored stapled tall octavo notebooks, containing the first three-quarters of the manuscript of the unpublished play, "Espana y Anti-Espana. " The holograph manuscript breaks off in mid-page with the words of General Franco, "Todos los sacerdotes estan con nostros. " ("All the priests are on our side. ") The manuscript is accompanied by a corrected carbon typescript of forty-four pages, in which the action proceeds to its conclusion--in which Death awards the Fascist generals the Orden del Buitre Septicefalo (Order of the Seven Headed Vulture) in honour of the magnificent banquet with which they have provided him. At once a political satire and a monumental drama á la Brecht, the protagonists include the three Fascist generals Franco, Millan and Quiepo as well as the spirit of the great Spanish hero, El Cid (to whose ancestry the family of Huidobro's mother can be traced) and Spain herself, portrayed as a "una estatua hieratica. " At the age of 43, Huidobro himself, scion of a very wealth Chilean family and long resident of Europe, fought on the side of the Republic against the forces of Franco, until the point at which the dispiriting outcome of the struggle was all but assured. Huidobro is among the great poets of the Spanish language in the Twentieth Century, to our mind, the greatest poet of Latin America. Virtually no manuscript material of his remains in private hands. An extraordinary unpublished manuscript.
