New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. 1935. First. First edition. Fine in a rubbed, very good dustwrapper with light nicking to the spinal extremities. Inscribed by the author: "for my dearest Jane and Wilfred with much love -- Bob, March 1935." The jacket pictures Leslie Howard in the lead role on Broadway. Also in the Broadway production was character actor Humphrey Bogart. Both reprised their roles for the classic film version, and were joined by Bette Davis. The film became Bogart's "breakthrough" role. A scarce title, and the only signed copy we've seen. See this book in 3D on our site. .

New York:: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1935. First edition. INSCRIBED, "For Garrett D. Byrnes, with many thanks, Robert Sherwood March 29th, 1940. " Byrnes had a long career at the Providence Journal as a writer, editor and arts critic. Sherwood won the Pulitzer Prize for drama three times, although not for this one, which may be better remembered than his Pulitzer winners in that it was a success on Broadway and in the film version with Leslie Howard, Bette Davis and a young Humphrey Bogart. One corner of book a little bumped, otherwise near fine in dust jacket (with Howard on front) with edges showing wear but still at least very good.

Professor Zygmund's Trigonometric Series, first published in Warsaw in 1935, established itself as a classic. It presented a concise account of the main results then known, but on a scale that limited the amount of detailed discussion possible. A greatly enlarged second edition (Cambridge, 1959) published in two volumes took full account of developments in trigonometric series, Fourier series, and related branches of pure mathematics since the publication of the original edition. These two volumes, bound together with a foreword from Robert Fefferman, outline the significance of this text. Volume I, containing the completely re-written material of the original work, deals with trigonometric series and Fourier series. Volume II provides much material previously unpublished in book form. Schmidt richtete. - Aus den einzelnen Redenbeiträgen: Leiter der Deutschen Arbeitsfront, Reichsorganisationsleiter Dr. Ley: "SIEG DER VERNUNFT" Die ationalsozialistische Revolution ist der Sieg der Vernunft über die Unvernunft. Der Nationalsozialismus ist die Lehre der Klarheit. Der Nationalsozialismus entwirrt alles, was uns ehemals kompliziert erschien. Er entwirrt die Mängel, die sich um uns gelegt haben und setzt die Dinge in ein klares Licht. So konstruierte man ehemals gleichzeitig mit der Verwirrung der Begriffe Interessengegensätze in unserem Volk. Man konstruierte Interessengegensätze zwischen Unternehmer und Arbeitnehmer, zwischen Bauer und Städter, zwischen Handwerk und Industrie, zwischen allen Berufen gegenseitig. Damals: Unwahrheit, Verwirrung, Kompliziertheit, Interessenkampf, Klassenhass, Standesdünkel. Heute: Klarheit, Einfachheit im Ausdruck und im Denken, Milderung der Interessengegensätze und dafür ein Klarmachen, daß allein die Gemeinschaft die Interessen auch des Einzelnen am besten zu wahren versteht. JEDER MUSS SICH DER GEMEINSCHAFT BEUGEN! Meine deutschen Volksgenossen und Volksgenossinnen vom Handwerk! Glauben wir Nationalsozialisten denn, daß es keine Interessen gibt? Nein, wir wissen, daß jeder gesunde Mensch das Streben nach aufwärts und vorwärts hat, und wir wollen dieses Streben auch nicht etwa unterdrücken. Nein, im Gegenteil, wir wollen es fördern. Aber wir erklären ebenso: Die Interessen der Gesamtheit sind auch die Interessen des Einzelnen, und die Summe der Interessen der einzelnen machen die Interessen des Volkes aus, d.h. es muß sich jeder unter die Gemeinschaft beugen in der Erkenntnis, daß das zu seinem eigenen Nutzen führt. Das ist die Lehre, die wir geben. Meine deutsche Volksgenossen und Volksgenossinnen ! Ist es denn wahr, daß Handwerk und Industrie im Gegensatz zu einander stehen? Ist es denn wahr, daß der Großbetrieb den Kleinbetrieb zugrunde richten muß? Und ist denn wahr, daß der Kleinbetrieb neben dem Großbetrieb keine Daseinsberechtigung mehr hat? Nein! Karl Marx, der das lehrte, ist heute in der gesamten Welt als falsch erkannt, und ich glaube, daß es niemanden, auch nicht einmal in Moskau, geben wird, der gewillt wäre, für die Lehre Karl Marx sein Leben zu opfern. (Beifall) EIN GESUNDES HANDWERK WIRD SICH SEINEN PLATZ AN DER SONNE EROBERN. Meine deutschen Volksgenossen, ein gesundes Volk wird Groß-, Mittel- und Kleinbetriebe haben, und nicht das ist die Krankheit eines Volkes, daß der Großbetrieb den Kleinbetrieb ausrottet, wie wir es in den letzten Jahren vor Adolf Hitler kannten, sondern die Krankheit bestand darin, daß wir politisch krank waren. Allein unsere politische Krankheit bedingte unsere wirtschaftliche Krankheit. Jetzt, wo wir wieder politisch am Gesunden sind, wo wir die Krise überstanden haben und uns der Führer wieder nach oben führt sehen wir, daß Handwerk nicht geduldet ist, sondern daß das Handwerk Kraft und Energie hat, in einem gesunden Staat sich seinen Platz an der Sonne zu erobern. Dieser Staat kann Ihnen kein Geschenk machen. Meine Volksgenossen, daß wollt Ihr auch nicht. Gesunde Menschen wollen sich nichts schenken lassen. Nein, Ihr müsst, wie alle Stände, alle Berufe in Deutschland, ehrlich und fleißig und unermüdlich und zähe um den Platz an der Sonne ringen, und das Volk auch. Aber Ihr wollt nicht geduldet sein, sondern Ihr wollt Euer Recht, und so soll es sein. Ihr seid nicht geduldet im Staat Adolf Hitlers, sondern Ihr habt Euren Platz. Ihr müsst diesen Platz einnehmen, nicht am Euretwillen, sondern um Deutschlands willen. (Beifall) Ihr müsst wieder ein Vorbild werden. Wenn sich gestern der Reichswirtschaftsminister und Reichsbundespräsident Dr. Schacht zu der Arbeitsfront und auch zu mir persönlich bekannte, so bekenne ich mich auch zu ihm und zu seinem Wollen. Ich erkläre, daß ich in diesem Manne einen Menschen gefunden habe, der das nationalsozialistische Gemeinschaftswollen nicht nur begreift, sondern, davon bin überzeugt, zum Inhalt seines Lebens gemacht hat. SEID VORBILD FÜR EINE GESELLSCHAFTSORDNUNG! Und schließlich wünsche ich: Seid ein Vorbild für eine neue Gesellschaftsordnung. Lehrling, Geselle und Meister, dieser Dreiklang muß wieder eingehen in unsere Gesellschaft. Lehrling kann jeder Deutsche werden und muß jeder Deutsche werden. Das Ausland schreibt, Deutschland befinde sich vor einer großen Panik, Deutschland werfe bald das Hitlerregime ab. Nein, Deutschland war noch nie so ruhig als heute und der deutsche Mensch weiß, daß sein Schicksal in den Händen Adolf Hitlers liegt. Hitler ist unser Schild, je größer die Not, um so größer Hitler, das wissen und darum folgen mir ihm!" - Reichsbankpräsident Dr. Schacht: WIR WOLLEN DAS GEMEINSCHAFTSGEFÜHL ALLER STÄNDE UND KLASSEN! Meine lieben deutschen Volksgenossen vom Handwerk! Ich bin heute Abend vor Ihnen erschienen in einem besonderen Auftrage, im Auftrage unseres Führers und Kanzlers, der es unendlich bedauert, daß es ihm nicht vergönnt ist, seine ursprüngliche Absicht auszuführen, vor Ihnen bei dieser Festwoche zu erscheinen. - Aber, meine Freunde, wer wie ich aus nächster Nähe die Arbeitsbelastung und die unerhörte Anspannung des Kanzlers kennt, der weiß, daß wir ihm alle die Ruhe gerne gönnen, die nötig ist, um die schweren Aufgaben zu lösen und durchzuführen, deren er sich so erfolgreich bisher angenommen hat (lebhafter Beifall). Meine Freunde! Sie wissen, daß auch in heutiger Zeit noch viel gemeckert wird, aber wenn ich auf die zweieinhalb Jahre zurücksehe, die wir hinter uns haben, so brauchen wir doch nur einmal eine einzige Frage zu stellen, um den unerhörten Erfolg der nationalsozialistischen Bewegung und unsere Führers festzustellen. Wie sah Deutschland vor zweieinhalb Jahren in der Welt aus und welche Stellung hat Deutschland heute? Ich verzichte darauf, mich durch meine Rede in Ihre Herzen hineinzuschleichen. Ich bin zu sehr als Liberalist und Kapitalist verschrien (Heiterkeit), und so frage ich nur das eine: Ob Liberalist oder Kapitalist oder sonst irgend etwas, das was mir im Dritten Reich wollen und was mit allen Mitteln geschaffen haben, ist, daß jeder einzelne zu seinem Recht auf Arbeit gelangt (lebhafter Beifall). KEIN KASTENSTAAT. Und wenn ich noch insbesondere vom Handwerk gesprochen haben, wenn ich mich dem Handwerk gegenübersehe, so will ich noch eines sagen: das Handwerk ist keine Klasse und kein Stand für sich. Auch das Handwerk wird im Dritten Reich nur gedeihen, wenn es sich mit dem übrigen Ständen verbunden sieht. Wenn ich für Ihre Rechte kämpfe, so verlange ich auch von Ihnen die Pflichten, das Verantwortungsgefühl gegenüber der Allgemeinheit. Wir haben nicht den Klassenkampf beseitigt, wir haben nicht den Klassenstaat geschlagen, um Ihnen etwa den Kastenstaat aufzubauen. Wir wollen das Gemeinschaftsgefühl aller Stände und Klassen. Wir wollen uns gegenseitig achten, weil wir vor der Ehre und Persönlichkeit unseres Mitmenschen Respekt haben, weil wir mit allen Volksgenossen aufbauen wollen ein glückliches neues Deutschland unter unserem Führer Adolf Hitler. Sieg Heil!" (stürmischer Beifall). - Reichsobmann Meinberg, Stellvertreter des Reichsbauernführers, über das Verhältnis zwischen Bauer und Handwerk: "UNSERE VORFAHREN WAREN KEINE FAULENZER UND SÄUFER!...... weist Staatsrat Meinberg auf die Notwendigkeit eines geschichtlichen Rückblickes hin, der am Jahresende in eine Zeit zurückführen müsse, in der unsere Vorfahren sich nach arteigenen Gesetzen ihre Umwelt selbst gestaltet haben. Die letzten fünfzehnhundert Jahre mit ihren fremdartigen Einflüssen schalten dabei aus. Wir sind die Blutsträger unserer Vorfahren, deren Bild uns schon in der Jugend durch einen falschen Unterricht auf Schulen und Universitäten ver.... Guter Zustand

- Original, vintage, 8" by 10", b&w, promotional, double weight photograph, inscribed and SIGNED in black ink by Noble Sissle at the top left. Undated, but the MCA logo at the bottom right corner strongly suggests 1935, the year in which Sissle's orchestra toured extensively under their management. The photograph is very good+, lightly age toned, with discreet pin holes to centre of each edge, touch of wear and creasing to corners and bottom edge with scattered light surface markings. Inscription and signature are near fine, clean without loss or fading. Noble Sissel (1889-1975) singer, guitarist, composer, lyricist, orchestra leader and producer, was a central and pioneering figure in the development of African American popular musical culture and entertainment. As a member of James Reese Europe's ground breaking "proto-jazz" orchestra, the Harlem Hellfighters, Sissle served in the U.S. Army during WWI, after which he began his extraordinary musical partnership with the great ragtime pianist and composer, Eubie Blake. First performing in Vaudeville as the Dixie Duo, Blake and Noble significantly broke with the minstrel tradition of performing in black face and then in 1921 wrote the smash hit, Shuffle Along, probably the first major Broadway musical to be written and directed by African Americans, launching the careers of future stars, Josephine Baker and Paul Robeson. After ending his partnership with Blake in 1926, Sissle moved to France and formed an orchestra which included top flight expatriate jazzmen, notably the great Sidney Bechet, and was a pioneer in exposing European audiences to the new developments in jazz and black popular music. Returning to the U.S. in 1930 he reformed his orchestra and toured successfully for several decades; in the mid-30's, the time from which the photograph dates, his band featured the young singer, Lena Horn, who was to go on to a long and illustrious career. There are a few minor flaws: issue 5 has a loose, but still in place, signature; issue 1 is evidently the most handled, judging by its having the highest degree of shelf wear and the most thumbed fore edge - all other magazines show only slight signs of handling.
