Ware, Edmund. (a/k/a Edmund Ware Smith, author of "A Tomato Can Chronicle" and "The One-Eyed Poacher.")
Rider in the Sun.
|
Boston. Lothrop, Lee, and Shepard Company. 1935. - First Edition with the matching title and copyright page dates of 1935. With "Published May, 1935" and "Printed in the United States of America" on the copryight page. "Dan leaves home because he is driven by an impulse, as are many men, to seek an obscure idea. In his childhood, Dan's father inspired him by tales of a rider on a tall, black horse. The rider grew to symbolize achievement." From the inside front flap of the dustjacket. A very handsome copy in finely woven light gray cloth stamped brightly in red on the front boards and on the spine. Very clean and tight throughout, apparently an unread copy. With the exception of some scattered dust foxing on the top edges, the book is near fine. In the pictorial, striking dustjacket printed in red and black. The original price of $2.00 is at the top of the inside front flap. There are several small chips at the top and bottom of the spine ends and at the corners. The folds are edge-rubbed, and there is a 1" closed tear at the bottom of the left spine edge. Overall, a very handsome, collectible copy of this early adolescent novel by the author of "A Tomato Can Chronicle" and "The One-Eyed Poacher." Especially unusual in the original dustjacket. First Edition with the matching title and copyright page dates of 1935. With "Published May, 1935" and "Printed in the United States of America" on the copryight page. Robinson, William S., 1861-1945.
BILOXI MISS. [Original January 1935 landscape-seascape oil painting of Biloxi, Mississippi by William S. Robinson.]
|
[Biloxi, MS: William S. Robinson, 1935.] - Original oil painting on board. Simple dark wood frame (probably contemporary to the painting); frame's approximate dimensions H 11 5/8 inches (29.5cm) x L 13 5/8 inches (34.5cm). Approx. image dimensions H 10 inches (25.25cm) x L 11 15/16 inches (30.25cm). Two-line handwritten title in ink on painting's verso "BILOXI - MISS | JANUARY - 27 - 1935" with a 1 1/8 inch diameter circular code marking "K | 81 | 1935" in ink and paint with additional ink notation "Card X-U." Past owner's September 1950 gift notation in pencil also on verso. Left two-thirds of painting's foreground comprised of modest house under large tree with right-side background of sailboat on what is presumably Biloxi's Back Bay with land in horizon. Entire image under a vibrant blue sky with hints of wispy white clouds. Strong brushwork throughout. Signed at lower right "Wm. S. Robinson." Painting professionally cleaned and restored by Hirabayashi Studio (restorer's summary sheet available) in June 2007. Jpeg images emailed upon request. Provenance from a Columbus, Mississippi estate and apparently acquired directly from the artist. From 1905 to 1920 William Robinson (Gloucester, Mass., September 15, 1861-January 11, 1945, Biloxi, Miss.) summered in Old Lyme, Connecticut and was a permanent denizen of the town from 1921 to 1937 where he resided at the home of local art matron Florence Griswold. Robinson earned artistic prominence not only by his skilled presentation of color and light but also by being a founding member of the Lyme Art Association and Old Lyme Art Colony, as a member of the National Academy, and by serving as president of the American Watercolor Society from 1914-1921. An Impressionist painter primarily known for his New England landscape, marine, and genre paintings, Robinson wintered and eventually retired to Biloxi, Mississippi where his coastal Gulf landscapes were equally lauded and he was a friend of brothers William Woodward and Ellsworth Woodward, the renowned art instructors at Tulane University School of Architecture and Newcomb College. Institutions holding Robinson paintings include the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery (Lincoln, NE), the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, DC), George Washington University (Washington, DC), and the Hickory Museum of Art with the most notable collections held by the Florence Griswold Museum (Old Lyme, CT) and the Lyman Allyn Museum (New London, CT). Please note that this painting will require additional postage for registered-insured mail commensurate to the delivery address.

OLIVIER, Laurence
Document Signed
|
1935. ("Laurence Olivier") in blue fountain pen ink, Culver City, California, August 19, 1935. 8 1/2" x 13"; 2 separate pages (recto only; two file holes in upper margin). Very good. Olivier's contract with MGM concerning his appearance as Greta Garbo's screen lover Don Antonio, in "Queen Christina." Also signed by MGM Vice-President Eddie Mannix. Garbo later insisted that John Gilbert replace Olivier, and MGM issued an abrupt announcement that Olivier had been fired and replaced. There are several versions regarding the reason for the replacement, but whatever the case, Olivier was out, and his release was handled in a way that left him humiliated. He fled to Hawaii for two weeks to escape reporters anxious to know what had really happened between him and Garbo (who typically remained silent on the matter). Olivier didn't go uncompensated, since Myron Selznick had negotiated a deal with Louis B. Mayer for a one-year contract for Olivier at forty thousand dollars, to be paid even if Garbo decided against his for the part of Don Antonio.. No Binding. Very Good/No Jacket.
