We piled all our stuff in duffel bags and full-field packs and lined them up in platoon formation in the usual falling-out area. Around 1000 hrs. we picked up our packs, rifles, steel helmets and took off for the train. An unforgettable sight during that long march was the long train of cars carrying the wives of some of the men. They edged along with the men and the tears flowed as they got that one last look at their soldier-husbands. They waved and threw kisses until we finally started moving to the tune of "Don't Fence Me In" played by the Fort Lewis military band. We completed the 50 mile trip to Fort Lawton, Washington, our Port of Embarkation. This was IT. Remaining 8 pages speak of his time aboard ship, Seattle to Honolulu. 2) Gene's Personal IE SHIMA DAIRY - Manually typed 27 pages ( each page is typed front and back). Beginning January 24th ending Sept. 2. This diary is rich in very detailed historical encounters with the enemy! Colette, Sidonie-Gabrielle [1873-1954]. Moreau, Luc-Albert [1882-1948]. ÔøΩ
Troisieme Cahiers De Colette. En Tournee Et Music-Hall. Avec 6 Lithos De Luc-Albert Moreau
|
Les Amis de Colette, 1935. Spine sun-tanned, with some tanning to wrapper edges also. Faint cup outline to front waxpaper wrapper. Withal, a unique VG+ copy. Illustrated with 6 lithographs by Luc-Albert Moreau. Of the 2 main parts herein, the first, "Music Hall", contains "La Tranformiste"...per Norell, "an interesting text for the modern reader because it depicts a phenomenon no longer seen on the stage: a woman whose performance consists of dressing up as different people or as different human types one after the other. " Furthermore, also according to Norell, this publication contains the only printed appearance of "Un Faune" [pictured]. Evidently a fairly uncommon item on the commercial market, with a search of ABPC showing it last at auction in 1993.

TRAVEN, B
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
|
1935. FIRST EDITION. TRAVEN, B. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1935. Octavo, original black cloth, uncut, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6000. Scarce first American edition of Traven's best and most popular novel!"one of the most gripping and uncompromising books ever written"!considered far superior to any preceding edition. Once described as an author who wrote for "people left at the outer edges of the glittering but anguished American dream," the true identity of B. Traven remains one of the 20th century's greatest literary mysteries (Charles Miller, Proletarian Writers of the Thirties). The writer's popular novels and stories have been translated into more than 30 languages, but Traven's true name and nationality remain unknown. He seems to have lived most of his life in Mexico and many of his manuscripts, typed in German, came from there, yet Traven once told his German publishers that his early novels were originally written in English. This novel!"one of the most gripping and uncompromising books ever written! [and] among the great works of modern literature" (Smiley, 249)!was first published in Germany in 1927 as Der Schatze der Sierra Madre. The first English translation saw print in London in 1934, translated by Basil Creighton. This first American edition "is not a translation: Traven wrote it in English, and it shows. The language is richer than in the stilted British edition, and the text runs much longer. Only in the American version will the English-language reader get the story's full impact" (Smiley, 249). John Huston's 1948 film adaptation won three Oscars and critical acclaim for star Humphrey Bogart. Johnson, 324. Sanders, 34. Book with mild foxing; very bright and clean dust jacket expertly restored. A handsome copy.

Gregynog Press.) BRIDGES (Robert)
Eros and Psyche, a Poem in XII Measures.
|
Newtown, Powys. , 1935 - ONE OF 285 NUMBERED COPIES (of an edition of 300 copies) this marked Out of Series, printed in black and red on Batchelor handmade paper, 24 wood-engravings by Loyd Haberly and John Beedham from original designs by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, the large initial letters designed by Graily Hewitt and printed in green, pp. [iv] (blanks), [viii], 143, [5] (blanks), lge. 4to., orig. white pigskin, backstrip gilt lettered and the four flat raised bands outlined in gilt, the gilt circle at the centre of the front cover enclosing a complex butterfly and floral design, some very minor offsetting to the covers from the fleece-lined box and slipcase as is usual, t.e.g., others untrimmed, matching white buckram fleece-lined box with cotton pull and the slipcase with printed label, near fine The engravings were selected by Loyd Haberly from a group of about seventy drawings executed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones and originally intended to illuminate Morris's poem Cupid and Psyche. Haberly redrew them and engraved five, John Beedham engraved the others. The book contains the first use of the Gregynog typeface, which met with mixed reactions; Newdigate praised the type and thought it magnificent, but his view appeared to be in a minority, and Hornby suggested it be used no more. Haberly was allowed to keep some of the type when he left Gregynog, and used it to better effect (some think) in his book The Crowning Year. (Harrop 33) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SASSOON
Siegfried L., 1886-1967, Poet) Unsigned but complete Autograph Letter to "My Dear Edward"
|
- starting "Coming upstairs after reading a couple of chapters of Martin Chuzzlewit, I feel dissatisfied with being just a poet. O to sit down at ones table & get going with Part XLVII of that enormous novel - for that enormous Public - instead of staring at a sonnet about something irridescent & insubstantial! Thus might a secondary schoolmaster (assistant) envy the driver of the Scotch express - did Dickens describe St Pancras at midnight on Xmas Eve? - with a page and a half of moralisations about the express engine of life rushing through the darkness and snowflakes - (human souls every one of them) . If he didnt he ought to have done (Arnold Bennett). I see Dickens fit plainly as the driver . (in a posthumous Punch cartoon by Tenniel . Driving his characters to the Terminus ." then he gives a pastiche of how Dickens would have described driving the train "now there is a stupendous hissing of steam and a tremendous trawling of trolly-loads of turkeys along the rumbling platform. Now Jasper Cram [?] leans with one intense last look to whisper in Lilians acquiescent ear those few and fondest syllables which it would be sacrilege to commit to print, even for thee - O gentlest of readers . Oh to be Dickens - or apparently, to be even Priestley! ." 2 sides 8vo., Heytesbury House, Wiltshire headed paper, 27th April 1935 Having started his writing career as a poet, in 1928 Sassoon turned to prose & published Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, anonymously, though his name appeared in the second impression. His fictionalized autobiography of his early years in Kent, was an immediate success. He continued the story in Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (1930) and Sherston's Progress (1936). From the estate of Juliette HUXLEY , wife of Julian.

New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1935. First Edition, thus, the first illustrated edition of Ulysses. The entire edition consisted of 1500 numbered copies, but of that number, only 250 copies were signed by both Joyce and Matisse. This copy has a cracking front hinge, but is otherwise in near fine condition in the original paper-covered cardboard publisher's slipcase, which is stained and cracked. The remains of the original glassine are laid in. In a custom quarter-morocco folding clamshell box..

(Matisse, Henri: 1869-1954) Joyce, James.
Ulysses. Etchings by Henri MATISSE.
|
NY: Limited Editions Club, 1935, first Matisse edition, one of 1500 numbered copies signed in pencil by Henri Matisse on the justification page. Illustrated with 6 hors-texte original soft-ground etchings (Duthuit 235-240), printed in black, + 20 photo-lithographic plates of drawings on yellow and blue paper. 11.5 x 9 inches, 420 pages. Internally bright, no foxing; front hinge strengthened; covers of binding with slight wear at extremities; the gilt lettering still bright; no slipcase. ”One of the very few American livres de peintres issued before World War II. The preparatory drawings reproduced with the soft-ground etchings (Matisse's only use of this medium) record the evolution of the figures from vigorous sketches to closely knit, if less spontaneous, compositions” - ”The Artist & The Book” 197. Other references: Duthuit no. 6; Skira 257; American Livre de Peintre 32; Slocum & Cahoon A22. From a Sotheby's catalogue: ”The text of this edition of Ulysses has recently gained added prominence in the so-called ”Joyce Wars” being cited as an important ”approved” edition published in Joyce's lifetime allegedly ignored or downplayed in the establishing of a corrected text”. And Christie's (London): ”The text of the present edition is taken from the second impression of the Odyssey Press edition published in Hamburg in 1933, which was revised by Stuart Gilbert, and Slocum and Cahoon wrote in 1953, 'is therefore the most accurate text [...] that has been published in the United States'. The American editions that preceded it were the pirated -- and corrupt -- 'ninth' edition published by Samuel and Max Roth in 1929, and the first authorized American edition (published by Random House in 1934) which was based on Roth's piracy and added some fresh errors. The present edition (which precedes by one year the first edition printed in England) was therefore the best published in America during Joyce's lifetime, with his authority, and under his supervision”.

Hammett, Dashiell]: Malloy, Doirs, and Harry Clork [screenwriters]:
EDMUND LOWE IN "MISTER DYNAMITE" [wrapper title - Dialogue Continuity Script].
|
[Los Angeles: Universal Pictures, ]. 1935 - [1],16,18,19,23,19,24,16 leaves plus two terminal blanks. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only. Punched and brad bound at top edge. Some slight tanning and slight darkening along top edge, small rectangle of tan offsetting to lower margin of second leaf, crease to final blank, otherwise very good. An undated dialogue continuity script for film based on Dashiell Hammett's original screen story, "On the Make," with a screenplay written by Doris Malloy and Harry Clork. The 1935 release was directed by Alan Crosland, and starred Edmund Lowe as "Mr. Dynamite." Hammett originally wrote the story for hire for Warner Bros. in 1931, but that studio rejected it and he was released from his contract. In September of 1934, Universal bought the rights to the story, and the film was released in May 1935. The opening credits continue to cite the original story's title, "On the Make." Script material for any of the early Hammett films or adaptations is not particularly abundant.

Scandalous Eye: the Surrealism of Conroy Maddox
|
LIVERPOOL U P. New Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. Conroy Maddox discovered surrealism by chance in 1935 and spent the rest of his life exploring its potential through his paintings, collages, photographs, objects and texts. Inspired by artists such as Max Ernst, Oscar Dominguez and Salvador Dal d, he rejected academic painting in favor of techniques that expressed the surrealist spirit of rebellion. Maddox went on to become a rebel in every sense 6 the defiance that had initially turned towards aesthetics became a broader challenge against morality, religion and the establishment as a whole. Maddox 2s colorful exploits and outstanding artistic production undoubtedly made him Britain 2s most beguiling, provocative and vigorous exponent of surrealism. This book maps out his place in the history of the surrealist movement and reveals the intellectual complexity as well as the poignant charm of an oeuvre that spans eight decades. ISBN10: 0853235597.
