BURROUGHS, Edgar Rice
Tarzan Lord of the Jungle
1928 1928 - BURROUGHS, Edgar Rice. Tarzan Lord of the Jungle. Chicago: A.C. McClurg, 1928. Octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket. $2200. First edition of Burroughs' twelfth Tarzan novel, a wonderful tale of "knighthood-in-flower, swashbuckling and African adventure," in scarce original dust jacket. In Tarzan Lord of the Jungle, one of Burroughs' most "enjoyable and imaginative" works, Tarzan rescues an American held in the Valley of the Sepulcher. A lively story of "knighthood-in-flower, swashbuckling and typical African adventure Tarzan Lord of the Jungle contains splendid color and action" (Lupoff, 174). As Arthur C. Clarke noted, "The man who can create Tarzan, the best known character in the whole fiction should not be taken too lightly!" (Greetings). Burroughs' Tarzan series "assures him a position of honor among American writers of the 20th century" (ANB). Written from May to July 1927, serially published in Blue Book Magazine, January-May 1928; this first edition in book form was published September 1928 as the last A.C. McClurg Tarzan title. "The most desirable of all the ERB hardbacks are the A.C. McClurg first editions" (Zeuschner, 255). With dust jacket illustration, title page illustration and five black-and-white plates by J. Allen St. John. In-text map of The Valley of the Sepulcher (314), "by Burroughs himself, who often drew maps while writing his novels" (Zeuschner 681). Currey, 93. Porges II:713-45. Taliaferro 220-21. Text and plates fresh, light edge-wear, bit of loss to spine seam of extremely good book; slight soiling, small closed tears along flap seams of extremely good dust jacket. [SASSOON, Siegfried]
MEMOIRS OF A FOX-HUNTING MAN
London: Faber & Gwyer. [1928]. First edition, first printing. Original blue cloth. 7.5 x 5.5". 395 pages. The signature mark "A" appears on the blank preceding the half-title, as noted by Keynes. Top and fore edges trimmed; bottom edge untrimmed (Keynes persuasively argues that no priority should be given to the various trimmed and untrimmed states of the edges). Spine just a little sun-faded, some mild foxing to endpapers, still better than very good. An autobiographical novel of life before World War I. Winner of the Hawthornden Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. The first printing (of 1,500 copies) and the first 500 copies of the second printing were published anonymously. The author's name was added to the title page for the remainder of the second printing and the numerous reprints. Keynes A29a. .
